D-Link DSL-2640B E1

DSL will not work at all on devices with BCM63xx DSL chipset (due to unavailability of FLOSS driver for Broadcom chips). Consider this when choosing a device to buy, or when deciding to flash OpenWrt on your device because it is listed as supported.

This is the hardware revision E1 for D-Link DSL-2640B. It is an ADSL2+ capable WiFi N router with 4 FastEthernet ports. This version was used widely in Italy where the Italian ISP Infostrada sent to his customers.

The hardware is similar to D-Link DSL-2740B

Currently not supported. However the OpenWrt firmware for D-Link DSL-2740B rev F1 works ok on this model. The drawback is the LED assignment which probably won't match.

Warning: Any version between 17.01.5 and 18.06.3 (both included) causes a cal_data corruption, leaving the wifi not usable for any firmware unless you restore again this partition.
BUG fixed in 18.06.4: brcm63xx: drop linux,part-probe usage where possible.

With this procedure you will flash the firmware using the bootloader web interface (foolproof)

  1. Set a static IP on your computer, use 192.168.1.35 (or any compatible), and connect the ethernet cable to the router.
  2. Unplug the router's power cord
  3. Press the button labeled as RESET, don't release it yet!
  4. Plug the power cord
  5. Wait 6 seconds or more
  6. Release the RESET button
  7. Browse to http://192.168.1.1 and you should see this screen:
  8. Select .bin firmware
  9. Press Update Software to start the firmware update process
  10. Wait for it to reboot
  11. ssh to 192.168.1.1 and set a root password, or browse to http://192.168.1.1 if LuCI is installed.

This model is tricky to open as it has a total of seven plastic clips holding the top. You might need brute force, and there are >chances you will damage your case.

  • Remove the screws under all four rubber feet
  • For the front clips: using two flat head screw drivers push bottom “grill” out until you can lift the top slightly
  • For the front side clips: using a flat head screw driver push the bottom out until it clicks (slide it in from the corner, then work yourself to where the clip is)
  • For the back side clips: these should be easy now with some wiggling
