ARC Flex FreeStation, Flex mARC, iFlex, and SplitStation

This device is NOT RECOMMENDED for future use with OpenWrt due to low flash/ram.
DO NOT BUY DEVICES WITH 4MB FLASH / 32MB RAM if you intend to flash an up-to-date and secure OpenWrt version onto it! See 4/32 warning for details.

1) This device does not have sufficient resources (flash and/or RAM) to provide secure and reliable operation.
This means that even setting a password or changing simple network settings might not be possible any more, rendering the device effectively useless. See OpenWrt on 4/32 devices what you can do now.

2) OpenWrt support for this device has ended in 2022.
19.07.10 was the last official build for 4/32 devices.

carambola

Rev WiFi
v1 1×1 2.4GHz 802.11n 150MiBit/s + 2×2 2.4GHz/5GHz 802.11n 300MiBit/s

Provides two 802.11n WNICs, for 2.4 and for 5GHz. The 5GHz one is MiMo 2T2R. Both seems to be USB RT3050. Uses the 8devices carambola as the base CPU board.

Install OpenWrt (generic explanation)

You can install OpenWrt over the web interface of the OEM firmware: SystemUpgrade Firmware

For stock firmware > 1.2 the OpenWrt firmware must end in .img before it can be upgraded.

root@OpenWrt:/# cat /proc/mtd

Basic configuration After flashing, proceed with this.
Set up your Internet connection, configure wireless, configure USB port, etc.

PoE pass-through is disabled by default. It can be enabled using “echo 1 > /sys/class/gpio/poe-passthrough/value”. To make this setting permanent, you'll have to add an initscript for this.

There is a 4 pin UART serial port on the bottom right corner of the board (if you see it with USB and RJ45 at top), could be marked as “J44” (don't get wrong with the other that is JTAG). The pins are numbered from 1 to 4:

  1. VCC
  2. RX
  3. TX
  4. GND

Connected to JTAG

port.jtag

generic.debrick Debricking using Serial. In that case a USB to Serial, but it's similar with other Serial connectors to your computer.

Generic pre-requisits:

  • serial connected from your machine to the router
  • terminal program (e.g. minicom, screen,...) set to 115200
  • tftp server (e.g. dnsmasq,...)
  • copy a working & full OpenWrt firmware image into your tftp server folder

Steps (USB to Serial example):

  • Connect from router serial to our serial in this way (numbered pins in router):
  1. empty (not necessary)
  2. RX in router to TX in computer
  3. TX in router to RX in computer
  4. GND in both
  • Configure computer
sudo ip addr add 10.10.10.3/24 dev
 sudo dnsmasq -d --port=0 --enable-tftp --tftp-root=/tmp/tftp/firmware/
  • Connect to router

 screen /dev/ttyUSB0 115200
  • Turn on router (e.g. plug PoE).

You have 4 seconds to press 2 (Load system code then write to Flash via TFTP)

Warning!! Erase Linux in Flash then burn new one. Are you sure?(Y/N)

Just Enter in two first questions, and in the lasta one write exactly the name of your OpenWrt (or other) binary like you have it in your directory /tmp/tftp/firmware/

That's it, you'll have a debricked router after waiting a few minutes writing to flash.
