opkg install collectd
vi /etc/collectd.conf
. /etc/init.d/collectd enable
. /etc/init.d/collectd start
  1. Install luci-app-statistics
  2. Configure collectd using the tools in Statistics → Setup section of the LuCI web interface.

Note: By default, collectd saves its RRD data in /tmp/rrd a RAM-based directory. Its contents will be lost when the device reboots. To save the data across power failure/restarts, consider Adding an external USB Drive and then configuring collectd to save the data to that new storage. Do this using the Output plugins → RRDTool tab in the GUI (configure the Storage directory), or the DataDir command of the <Plugin rrdtool> section of the collectd configuration file at /etc/collectd.conf .

Configure the file /etc/collectd.conf according to:

Assuming the daemon is already running, use the commands sh /etc/init.d/collectd stop and sh /etc/init.d/collectd start to reload and apply changes on the fly.

collectd is strictly a statistics collection service and does not provide any way to visualize the gathered data. To enable visualization of the gathered data, install and configure the collectd-mod-rrdtool plugin, and make sure the luci-app-statistics package is installed. The statistics gathered by collectd should then be viewable in the LuCI web interface.

For more information about RRDTool, see statistic.rrdtool and

To enable/disable start on boot:
. /etc/init.d/collectd enable this simply creates a symlink: /etc/rc.d/S80collectd → /etc/init.d/collectd
. /etc/init.d/collectd disable this removes the symlink again

Note 1: This list is true for r25513 (2011-02), additional packages could be available.
Note 2: The sizes are true for that version compiled for ar71xx. They will differ for other versions and other architectures. Some dependencies are already installed together with the collectd package. Don't count them double to estimate the size.

librrd1 1.0.50-1 zlib 138968 RRD is the Acronym for Round Robin Database. RRD is a system to store and display time-series data (i.e. network bandwidth, machine-room temperature, server load average). It stores the data in a very compact way that will not expand over time, and it presents useful graphs by processing the data to enforce a certain data density. It can be used either via simple wrapper scripts (from shell or Perl) or via frontends that poll network devices and put friendly user interface on it. This is version 1.0.x with cgilib-0.4, gd1.3 and libpng-1.0.9 linked into The library is much smaller compared to the 1.2.x version with separate dynamic linked libraries. This package contains a shared library, used by other programs.
