ZTE MF286D is a router with four gigabit ethernet ports, WIFI4 and WIFI5 wireless, integrated LTE cat.12 modem in mPCIE slot, USB 2.0 port and 2xRJ11 for fixed phone connections.

None at this time.

Serial + initramfs:

  1. Place OpenWrt initramfs image for the device on a TFTP in the server's root. This example uses Server IP: 192.168.1.3
  2. Connect serial console (115200,8n1) to X8 connector.
  3. Connect TFTP host to MF286D using an ethernet cable. Don't use the shared WAN/LAN1 port.
  4. Stop u-Boot by pressing ESC, and run u-Boot commands:
    setenv serverip 192.168.1.3
    setenv ipaddr 192.168.1.72
    set fdt_high 0x85000000

    bootm $loadaddr
  5. If you want to be able to revert to stock, make backup of original partitions, it's documented on the MF286R page.
  6. Login via ssh or serial and use wget (or any other utility) to download sysupgrade image into 'tmp/'. You may skip this and instead do it through LuCI web interface later.
  7. Remove stock partitions:
    ubiattach -m 9 #it could return error if ubi was attached before or rootfs part was erased before
    ubirmvol /dev/ubi0 -N ubi_rootfs #it could return error if rootfs part was erased before
    ubirmvol /dev/ubi0 -N ubi_rootfs_data #some devices doesn't have it
  8. If installing from sysupgrade image stored at 'tmp/', proceed to install image via “sysupgrade -n” (like “sysupgrade -n tmp/openwrt-ipq40xx-generic-zte_mf286d-squashfs-sysupgrade.bin”; previously retrieved image using wget). Sometimes it could print ubi attach error, but please ignore it if process goes forward.
  9. If during the install you get:
    ubi0 warning: 0xc070b5d0: error -74 (ECC error) while reading 64 bytes from PEB 169:2048, read only 64 bytes, retry

    Or on reboot it fails and leaves you on uboot with

    Nand Flash error. Status = 12336 NAND page read failed

    Then /dev/mtd9 needs to be formatted.

  10. Boot with the factory image again (as listed above) and use issue the following followed by the sysupgrade:
    ubidetach -m 9
    ubiformat -y /dev/mtd9
    sysupgrade -n openwrt.......bin
  11. If installing from LuCI, make sure sysupgrade image is on your computer. While computer is connected to router through Ethernet cable, within your browser go to http://openwrt.lan (see this for alternative ways) and you'll see login page, leave password blank and press 'Login'. Follow this guide for further steps.

generic.sysupgrade

  • Browse to http://192.168.1.1/cgi-bin/luci/mini/system/upgrade/ LuCI Upgrade URL
  • Upload image file for sysupgrade to LuCI
  • Wait for reboot

If you don't have a GUI (LuCI) available, you can alternatively upgrade via the command line.

  • Login as root via SSH on 192.168.1.1, then enter the following commands:

Since the router is equipped with LTE modem as its main WAN interface, it might be useful to connect to the Internet right away after installation. To do so over Luci, you'd need to connect to the Internet via other means (Ethernet or Wi-Fi STA) and then install luci-proto-qmi package.

You can also add the necessary packages when building a new image with Firmware Selector or download the package(s) via OpenWrt's website (architecture: arm_cortex-a7_neon-vfpv4), upload them to the router and install manually, which doesn't require the router to be connected to the Internet. As of this writing, the package can be found from the following page (check and update the version accordingly): https://downloads.openwrt.org/releases/23.05.5/packages/arm_cortex-a7_neon-vfpv4/luci/

If you can't access the Internet via other means or you want to set it up via console or SSH, you can put the following entries in /etc/config/network, replacing the specific APN with one needed for your ISP.

Numbers 0-3 are Ports 1-4 as labeled on the unit, number 4 is the Internet (WAN) on the unit, 5 is the internal connection to the router itself. Don't be fooled: Port 1 on the unit is number 3 when configuring VLANs. vlan0 = eth0.0, vlan1 = eth0.1 and so on.

Note: This will void your warranty!

  1. Take of battery lid (no battery support for this model, battery cage is dummy). Some models don't have a battery lid in which case skip this step.
  2. Unscrew screw placed behind battery lid. Skip if no battery lid.
  3. Take off back cover. It attached with multiple plastic clamps.
  4. Unscrew four more screws hidden behind back case.
  5. Remove front panel from blue chassis. There are more plastic clamps.
  6. Unscrew two screws, which secures the PCB in the chassis.
  7. Extract board from blue chassis.

The internal modem is a Cat.12 LTE device based on Qualcomm's MDM9250 chipset. It supports up to 3xCA for download and up to 2xCA for upload in B12 FW version (firmware dependant).

The modem is installed in a mPCIe slot and could potentially be removed or replaced.

Supported LTE bands: B1 B3 B7 B8 B20 B28 B32 B38 (that may vary depending on the modem firmware version used)
