Archer C6

Warning The 5 GHz radio / Qualcomm Atheros QCA9886 support seems to be buggy in some cases.

Some users report much improved long-term stability with 5 GHz by using the closed-source ath10k firmware instead of the open-source ath10k-ct firmware. To do this remove the packages “kmod-ath10k-ct” and “ath10k-firmware-qca9888-ct” and instead install “kmod-ath10k” and “ath10k-firmware-qca9888”.

Flashing OpenWrt through the OEM web interface is not always possible: the OpenWrt factory image needs to have the correct magic that matches the OEM firmware version. So, depending on the OEM firmware version, different versions of OpenWrt can be installed through the OEM web interface:

This is going to be a pain, expect a patch to generate factory images for several OEM firmware versions eventually.

It is possible to bypass this check by flashing via the bootloader's TFTP recovery mode, however several steps and a lot of tries are necessary to get everything right, as the link training window is extremely tight. For more information, see the Flash using TFTP recovery section below.

If your OEM firmware supports it, simply upload openwrt-ath79-generic-tplink_archer-c6-v2-squashfs-factory.bin via the router Web interface.

An ethernet switch between the router and the TFTP server should be used in order to prevent the TFTP server's interface to shutdown!
If the server's interface shuts down, the router times out and it won't find the TFTP server (see unsuccessful log output below).

  1. Connect to your router's WAN port (it doesn't work with LAN ports!) to a network switch or a computer
  2. Connect another cable from the switch to the computer/TFTP server (or directly)
  3. Set the computer IP to 192.168.0.66
  4. Start a tftp server with the OpenWrt factory image in the tftp root directory renamed to ArcherC6v2_tp_recovery.bin
  5. Connect the power cable to the router, press and hold the reset button and turn the router on
  6. Keep the reset button pressed until the WPS LED lights up
  7. Wait ~150 seconds until flashing and booting is completed

If you're having TFTP time out, it is caused by taking too long to negotiate the link. Use 10/100MBit switch. see Post https://forum.openwrt.org/t/cant-boot-tftp-recovery-archer-c6-v2/36487/26.

Please Note: Partitioning For US and EU Versions is different! The example below flashes the firmware in the corresponding partition address for the EU version(0x9f030000). If you are flashing the US version, 0x9f030000 is actually the u-boot partition. Using the below example as is in a US version Archer C6/A6 will overwrite the u-boot partition. When Flashing the US version, substitute 0x9f030000 with 0x9f050000 in the code shown below.

Note: This will void your warranty!

  • Remove two screws located at the bottom of the device
  • Pry open the shiny top. The top is really tight. Opening it will most likely break some plastic inside and will void your warranty. Perhaps this is intentional. PCB is located a good 2-3cm away from the edges in front and sides so you can use some gorilla power to get it open.

There are no pins or pads below the aluminium heat sink, just two thermal pads and three shake proof washers as distance holders

The main IC QCA9563 (under the metal shield) supports “Two USB 2.0 Host controllers with built-in MAC/PHY”, however on the PCB, the pins are not connected to anything (except for VDD12_PLL_USB).

The following pins might be used for USB:

  • (Pin B43) VDD12_PLL_USB (connected to VCC?)
  • (Pin A55) USB_DP1 (not connected)
  • (Pin B42) USB_DM1 (not connected)
  • (Pin A53) VDD12_PLL_USB (connected to VCC?)

  • (Pin A52) USB_DM0 (not connected)

However is is extremely hard to connect the pins since the pin distance is only 0.5mm/0.026inches.
