ZyXEL NR7101

The ZyXEL NR7101 is an 802.3at PoE powered 5G/NR, IP68 certified, outdoor ethernet router/bridge with integrated directional 5G/NR MIMO antennas. It has a WiFi radio, and a GPS in the modem, but these should be considered secondary functions. The WiFi antennas are integrated in the main PCB.

Many ZyXEL devices have a supervisor shell and web account with more power than the normal admin user documented in manual. The default password for this account us calculated from the serialnumber using one of a small set of algorithms. The same password is used by default for the root shell user.

The ZyXEL algorithms are generally not known, but the code implementing them is availabke in binary form as libraries in all the devices depending on one of them. Anyone can just call that code…

Unpack it and run

The output is the “Old algorithm supervisor password” applicable for the NR7101.

The tool runs ARM code from a Broadcom based VMG8825, so it needs qemu-arm-static or qemu-arm. Install the qemu-user-static or qemu-user packages from your distro. See the README.md in the archive for further information.

  • Log in as “supervisor” on https://172.17.1.1/
  • Upload OpenWrt initramfs-recovery.bin image on the Maintenance → Firmware page
  • Wait for OpenWrt to boot and ssh to root@192.168.1.1
  • (optional) Copy OpenWrt to the recovery partition. See below
  • Sysupgrade to the OpenWrt sysupgrade image and reboot
  • Log in as “root” on 172.17.1.1 port 22022
  • scp OpenWrt initramfs-recovery.bin image to 172.17.1.1:/tmp
  • Prepare bootloader config by running:
    nvram setro uboot DebugFlag 0x1
    nvram setro uboot CheckBypass 0
    nvram commit
  • Run mtd_write -w write initramfs-recovery.bin Kernel and reboot
  • Wait for OpenWrt to boot and ssh to root@192.168.1.1
  • (optional) Copy OpenWrt to the recovery partition. See below
  • Sysupgrade to the OpenWrt sysupgrade image and reboot
  • Verify that you are running a working OpenWrt recovery image from flash
  • ssh to root@192.168.1.1 and run:
    fw_setenv CheckBypass 0
    mtd -r erase Kernel2
  • Wait while the bootloader mirrors Image1 to Image2
  NOTE: This should only be done after successfully booting the OpenWrt recovery image from the primary partition during installation. Do not do this after having sysupgraded OpenWrt! Reinstalling the recovery image on normal upgrades is not required or recommended.
  • Halt boot by pressing Escape on console
  • Set up a tftp server to serve the OpenWrt initramfs-recovery.bin image at 10.10.10.3
  • Type ATNR 1,initramfs-recovery.bin at the ZLB> prompt
  • Wait for OpenWrt to boot and ssh to root@192.168.1.1
  • Sysupgrade to the OpenWrt sysupgrade image
  NOTE: ATNR will write the recovery image to both primary and recovery partitions in one go.
  • Halt boot by pressing Escape on console
  • Type ATGU at the ZLB> prompt to enter the U-Boot menu
  • Press 4 to select 4: Entr boot command line interface.
  • Set up a tftp server to serve the OpenWrt initramfs-recovery.bin image at 10.10.10.3
  • Load it using tftpboot 0x88000000 initramfs-recovery.bin
  • Boot with “bootm 0x8800017C” to skip the 380 (0x17C) bytes ZyXEL header

This method can also be used to RAM boot OEM firmware. The warning regarding OEM applies! Never boot an unknown OEM firmware, or any OEM firmware with a SIM in any slot.

  NOTE: U-Boot configuration is incomplete (on some devices?). You may have to configure a working mac address before running tftp using ''setenv eth0addr <mac>''

There is no glue or plastic tabs holding the router together. Only screws. The case is one of the easiest ones to open, despite the IP68 certification. There is no need to disconnect any antenna cables either. But if you do, then I recommend taking lots of pictures first, since there is an awfull lot of them…

  • Remove the 2 screws securing the SIM/button/LED cover and pull off the WLAN button with a knife or similar shar object.
  • Remove the 12 screws on the backside, along the edge of the case.
  • Split the plastic antenna cover from the metal backplate with the PCBs. The GPS antenna is fixed to the cover, so be careful with the cable
  • Remove the 4 screws securing the antenna PCB to the main PCB

The main PCB can be removed from the backplate by removing 4 screws. This is normally not necessary and might reduce the efficiency of the thermal pads connecting to the backplate unless you replace them. But the pads are not glued and will not be damaged by removal, so reuse is most likely possible.

A 3.3V TTL UART is located on the populated 5 pin header J5 in the upper left corner of the main PCB (down is the side with ethernet port, buttons and SIM slots).

3.3V should not be connected to USB TTL UART adapters, as per port.serial, but is available if you want to connect to a Bluetooth TTL UART adapter as shown in the picture. Bluetooth allows console connections with all gaskets in place, maintaining IP68, but has some obvious security implications.

It is also possible to route a serial or USB cable through the cable gland used by the ethernet cable, either using 2 thinner cables or a cable with more than 4 pairs. A single multipair round cable is recommended if the router is mounted outdoors.

The modem comes with Quectel's automatic APN configuration enabled. This is known to interfere with manual configuration, causing hard to debug issues. Disabling the feaure is highly recommended. Take it from someone who spend days debugging all sorts of weird connection issues before taking this advice….

WARNING: Never reboot the NR7101 or remove power while the modem is being upgraded. If the process appears to fail then wait patiently. The modem will retry several times before giving up. Any attempt to forcefully cancel the process might brick the modem.

The RG502Q-EA in my ZyXEL NR7101 came with firmware revision R01A04. ZyXEL has published a FOTA diff upgrading the modem firmware to R11A03. The upgrade can be done from within OpenWrt just as easy and safe as from the stock firmware. The same caution should be taken i both cases.

  • Stop all processes conflicting with ttyUSBx device access, but leave the modem conneced.
  • Connect to one of the AT command ports and verify that the current firmware version is correct and that the modem is connected to the Internet
