NETGEAR WNDR4300 v2
WNDR4300 v2 uses the same board as the WNDR4500 v3
Supported Versions
Hardware Highlights
Installation
→ Install OpenWrt (generic explanation)
Please add the installation procedure here.
Flashing factory image using Netgear UI and subsequently rebooting may result in bricking the router as reported for very similar WNDR4500v3. The solution is to flash factory image using Netgear UI and immediately flash sysupgrade image via SSH. See WNDR4500v3 Unbrick & Install thread
UNVERIFIED FOR WNDR4300v2 as of 7 Feb 2022 Summarised instructions, based on WNDR4500v3, to apply both the factory and sysupgrade images is as follows:
- Use the Netgear UI and flash the squashfs-factory.img to the router. The router will automatically restart when the install is complete.
- Next, SSH into the router at 192.168.1.1 and execute the following commands to install the 21.02.1 squashfs-sysupgrade image release in this example:
cd /tmp wget https://downloads.openwrt.org/releases/21.02.1/targets/ath79/nand/openwrt-21.02.1-ath79-nand-netgear_wndr4300-v2-squashfs-sysupgrade.bin sysupgrade -v /tmp/openwrt-21.02.1-ath79-nand-netgear_wndr4300-v2-squashfs-sysupgrade.bin
- You will be disconnected. The router will eventually restart and OpenWrt is ready for use. The router should no longer brick itself when powered off.
OEM easy installation
This is for installing for the first time OpenWrt on the router (still with the stock firmware): This method was tested by one user and reported here See Netgear 4300 for OpenWrt in 2022
- Connect your computer to the router with an ethernet cable and browse to
http://192.168.1.1/
(default credentials areadmin password
) - In Netgear web interface go to:
Advanced > Administration > Firmware Upgrade
- Download both factory and sysupgrade files from either the
- or
- Upload the Openwrt firmware: openwrt-21.02.3-ath79-nand-netgear_wndr4300-v2-squashfs-factory.img
- Proceed with the firmware installation and wait some minutes until it finish.
- Once Openwrt, has been flashed. Navigate to
http://192.168.1.1/
and set a password for the Openwrt. - Navigate to System -- Backup/Flash Firmware and upload the lastest (in this case 21.02.3) openwrt-21.02.3-ath79-nand-netgear_wndr4300-v2-squashfs-sysupgrade.bin in Flash new firmware image. Let it upgrade and reboot.
- Now you can enjoy the latest Openwrt on Netgear 4300V2, without even using SSH or telnet access.
Flash Layout
Find out flash layout, then add the flash layout table here (copy, paste, modify the example).
Please check out the article Flash layout. It contains examples and explanations that describe how to document the flash layout.
OEM installation using the TFTP method
Specific values needed for tftp
Enter values for “FILL-IN” below
Bootloader tftp server IPv4 address | FILL-IN |
---|---|
Bootloader MAC address (special) | FILL-IN |
Firmware tftp image | Latest OpenWrt release (NOTE: Name must contain “tftp”) |
TFTP transfer window | FILL-IN seconds |
TFTP window start | approximately FILL-IN seconds after power on |
TFTP client required IP address | FILL-IN |
Upgrading OpenWrt
These are generic instructions. Update with your router's specifics.
LuCI Web Upgrade Process
- Browse to
http://192.168.1.1/cgi-bin/luci/mini/system/upgrade/
LuCI Upgrade URL - Upload image file for sysupgrade to LuCI
- Wait for reboot
Terminal Upgrade Process
If you don't have a GUI (LuCI) available, you can alternatively upgrade via the command line. There are two command line methods for upgrading:
sysupgrade
mtd
Note: It is important that you put the firmware image into the ramdisk (/tmp) before you start flashing.
sysupgrade
- Login as root via SSH on 192.168.1.1, then enter the following commands:
cd /tmp wget http://downloads.openwrt.org/snapshots/trunk/XXX/xxx.abc sysupgrade /tmp/xxx.abc
mtd
If sysupgrade
does not support this router, use mtd
.
- Login as root via SSH on 192.168.1.1, then enter the following commands:
cd /tmp wget http://downloads.openwrt.org/snapshots/trunk/XXX/xxx.abc mtd write /tmp/xxx.abc linux && reboot
Debricking
Use Netgear nmrpflash tool to reinstall stock Netgear firmware. See WNDR4500v3 device page for similar instructions.

Note: This will void your warranty!
The rubber feet must be removed from the bottom and an extremely small torx (T9) driver is the correct tool for removing the screws. A flat screwdriver filed to just the right width will also work.
