Notes on the 2.5GBit wan port:
It is not possible to force 2500Mbps negotiation via ethtool at the moment. In my testing, the auto-negotiation worked fine to bring the link up at 2500Mbps and I could manually force this link down to 1000Mbps with ethtool.

Installation
OEM easy installation
Installation from stock firmware is as simple as uploading the OpenWrt ...factory.img
via the stock firmware updater (Advanced→Administration→Firmware Update).
The stock firmware will throw an error message warning that the new firmware is older, click Okay to continue. Then click Yes to upload. After reboot OpenWrt will be installed.

Power consumption
Measured with Peaktech P9035 (CS5460A-BSZ) at the wall power plug, the device consumes 6.6W with both WiFis active and three 1 Gigabit Ethernet links established without much traffic. Power consumption increases by 0.2W when changing scaling governor from ondemand
(Idle with 437.5 MHz) to performance
(Idle with 1350 MHz). Peak power consumption of about 10W has been seen loading the device with 50 Mbit/s OpenVPN traffic via Wifi, which loads one CPU core about 30%.

Opening the case
Note that the right side panel cannot be removed without removing the pcb mounting screws (internal access)!
To open the case, the bottom stand must first be removed, there are two screws holding it on. These screws will prevent the left side panel from being removed. Next pry the left side panel free. This panel is held to the main body with plastic clips, I used a plastic pry bar around all the edges and shims to prevent re-latching while working.

Stock firmware
Current version is 1.0.4, SPL source archive is here: https://www.downloads.netgear.com/files/GPL/WAX206_V1.0.4.0_Source.rar
Appears to be based on LEDE 17.01 and can be accessed from the device (https://192.168.1.x/cgi-bin/luci/) once the root password as be set via telnet/serial/ssh.
Disabling Lan Leds
The command “mdio” is required: opkg install mdio-tools
To disable lan led's run: mdio mt7530-0 0:0x1f raw 0x21 0x0008
To make it permanent write it via the web UI at System→Startup→Local Startup, or via SSH into /etc/rc.local
To restore the blinking default behavior, run: mdio mt7530-0 0:0x1f raw 0x21 0x000b

Enabling Telnet
A few options exist for enabling telnet:
- Using serial port:
service telnet start
- Enabling via the hidden form on the https://router.ip/debug_detail.htm page:
Being logged in on the normal web interface is required.
To enable Debug mode, enter the Browser's Web Page Inspector, search HTML for telnet
and unhide the entries by changing style=“display: none;” → style=“display”
, hidden → visible
.
A checkbox “Enable Telnet” should appear in the webpage. Once clicked, the page reloads and the router can be accessed via telnet. the webUI admin account grants access to a root shell.
Set a root password to access luci at https://router.ip/cgi-bin/luci/.
The debug_detail.htm
also shows some stats like CPU/Memory/Flash Usage, one can enable Debug logging or lan/wan Packet Capturing (.pcap
) to System Memory or USB drive. The file debuginfo.tar.gz
can be downloaded directly.
