Note: Instructions are based on Netgear Firmware 1.0.4.2. They should work for newer versions as well.

  1. Disconnect the device from the Internet.
  2. Factory Reset the device.
  3. Connect to the device. Either via Ethernet cable to a LAN port or the default WiFI (NETGEAR-1). The default WiFI passphrase is sharedsecret.
  4. Browse to http://192.168.0.100. You should be forced into the setup wizard.
  5. Set a password for the root account.
  6. Skip the Setup Wizard. Confirm you really want to skip the setup wizard.
  7. Once at the main administration page, on the left menu, choose ADVANCED > Administration > Firmware Update. The Firmware Update page displays.
  8. In the manual update, Click Choose File. Choose the openwrt-ramips-mt7621-netgear_wac124-squashfs-factory.img file from your computer. Click OK.
  9. The flashing to openwrt image completes in 3-5 minutes. The device should automatically reboot when flashing is complete. If not, wait 5 minutes and manually power off/power on the device.

Specific values needed for tftp

  1. Login to your router's admin page
  2. Choose System > Software from the menu at the top.
  3. Click “Update lists…” button. Wait for it to finish.
  4. Click the “Updates” tab.
  5. Click the “Upgrades…” button.
  6. Let it complete updates and reboot.

If you don't have a GUI (LuCI) available, you can alternatively upgrade via the command line. There are two command line methods for upgrading:

  • sysupgrade
  • mtd

Note: It is important that you put the firmware image into the ramdisk (/tmp) before you start flashing.

sysupgrade

  • Login as root via SSH on your device IP, then enter the following commands:
cd /tmp
wget http://downloads.openwrt.org/snapshots/trunk/XXX/xxx.abc
sysupgrade /tmp/xxx.abc

mtd

If sysupgrade does not support this router, use mtd.

  • Login as root via SSH on 192.168.1.1, then enter the following commands:
cd /tmp
wget http://downloads.openwrt.org/snapshots/trunk/XXX/xxx.abc
mtd write /tmp/xxx.abc linux && reboot

In failsafe mode you need to use a crossover cable and use the LAN1 port to get access to the device to start recovery.

Basic configuration After flashing, proceed with this.
Set up your Internet connection, configure wireless, configure USB port, etc.
