Linksys WHW03 V2

Under Construction!
This page is currently under construction. You can edit the article to help completing it.

Linksys WHW03 V2 (Velop) is a modular tri-band mesh WiFi. The device is based on the Qualcomm IPQ4019 SoC. It offers 1×2.4GHz, 2x5GHz WiFi radios and also include a bluetooth and a zigbee module.

Linksys WHW03 V2 (Set of 3)

The supported channels of the two 5 GHz radios are severely limited:

  • radio0: supports channels 149 through 165 (no DFS/TPC needed in the USA).
  • radio1: supports channels 36 through 48 (no DFS/TPC needed in the USA).

Channels 32, 52 through 68, 96 through 144, and 169 through 177 are unusable on either radios.

This means that these devices cannot in general connect as clients to existing 5 GHz networks, and thus cannot repeat them, which severely limits the usefulness of having dual 5 GHz radios.

FIXME Find out flash layout, then add the flash layout table here (copy, paste, modify the example).

Please check out the article Flash layout. It contains examples and explanations that describe how to document the flash layout.

There are 2 Ethernet ports on the device. In OpenWRT, by default, the first one is configured as a WAN port and the second one as a LAN. To access the device without Wifi, you need to connect your computer to the LAN port, it won't work with the WAN..

  1. Open Linksys Web UI - http://192.168.1.1/ca (or http://10.65.1.1/ca depending on your setup)
    1. On newer firmware versions: open the Web UI, login with Administrator password and click the “CA” link at the bottom right of the page
  2. Login with your admin password. The default password can be found on a sticker under the device.
  3. To enter into the support mode, click on the “CA” link and the bottom of the page.
  4. Open the “Connectivity” menu and upload the squash-factory image with the “Choose file” button.
  5. Click start. Ignore all the prompts and warnings by click “yes” in all the popups.

You can also flash new firmware with this alternative procedure, which works even on uninitialized devices:

  1. Open https://192.168.1.1/fwupdate.html (replace 192.168.1.1 with the actual address of your Velop device)
  2. Login with username “admin” and your administrator password. On uninitialized devices, the password is “admin”
  3. Type your administrator password in the “Admin password” field. On uninitialized devices, leave the default value
  4. In the file picker under that field, upload the squashfs-factory image with the “Browse” button
  5. Click on “Update” and wait. Once the procedure is complete, the page will show '{“result”: “OK”}'

The Wifi radios are turned off by default. To configure the router, you will need to connect your computer to the LAN port of the device.

Specific values needed for tftp

FIXME Enter values for “FILL-IN” below

  • Browse to http://192.168.1.1/cgi-bin/luci/mini/system/upgrade/ LuCI Upgrade URL
  • Upload image file for sysupgrade to LuCI
  • Wait for reboot
  1. Power off router with power switch.

  2. Turn power back on and power LED will light.
    1. As soon as all LEDs turn off (~2s), power off router with power switch

  3. Turn power back on and power LED will light.
    1. As soon as all LEDs turn off (~2s), power off router with power switch

  4. Turn power back on and power LED will light.
    1. As soon as all LEDs turn off (~2s), power off router with power switch

  5. Turn power back on and allow router to fully boot.
    • It should now be booted to the alternate firmware partition

Explanation: There is a counter for boot attempts. The counter is increased by 1 at the start of each boot process, then is reset to 0 after a successful boot. If the counter reaches 3, the boot is considered a failure and the boot partition is switched to the other partition (A-→B or B-→A).

Thus, if you interrupt the boot process three times, the router thinks that the current firmware is faulty and switches to the other partition. Note that there is no guarantee that the other partition works. It has the contents and settings that were there when the boot was switched last time, usually at the last sysupgrade. That boot marker switch (A-→B or B-→A) happens at every sysupgrade, so likely you just have the previously used firmware there (either OEM or OpenWrt). But the marker may have been manually toggled, or auto-toggled after three failures.

Basic configuration After flashing, proceed with this.
