The Linksys EA7500 V1 is a MU-MIMO Dual-Band WiFi router, which has one 2.4GHz and one 5GHz WiFi Interfaces,The radios support MCS 0-9 (up through 256 QAM) for devices and paths that are compatible with those high-density modulations. Supports DFS channels, from channel 36 up to 173 (may vary on each region).

This is a router based on a Qualcomm IPQ8064 2-core SoC.

It has four 1G LAN ports, one 1G WAN port, a USB 3.0 interface and three detachable external antennas.

Power comes from its external 12V, 2A power adapter.

Note: Some devices won't flash via web gui, mostly routers from USA with firmware > v1.1. Flashing TFTP + serial for the rescue. NB: stock serial TTL is 1.8v.

Installation:

  • Newer stock images doesn't allow to install custom firmware.
  • US stock firmware > v1.1 is GPG signed and cannot install non-US Linksys or Openwrt firmware from the GUI.
  • Please downgrade software to 1.1.2 version. Official firmware: Link
  • Do it two times to downgrade all stored images.
  • Apply factory image via web-gui.

generic.flashing.tftp

Serial + TFTP method:

  • downgrade to 1.1.2 two times. Official firmware: Link
  • connect ethernet and serial cable
  • set ip address of TFTP server to 192.168.1.254
  • put openwrt factory image to tftp folder and rename it to macan.bin
  • stop device while booting in u-boot
  • run command: “run flashimg”
  • run command: “setenv boot_part 1”
  • run command “saveenv”
  • reset

If you got Loading T T T T T… error it means the bootloader can't download firmware, check your TFTP server, firewall or serial connection.

Back to stock:

  • Please use old non-gpg image like this 1.1.2: Link
  • ssh to router and copy image to tmp
  • use sysupgrade -n -F
  • Browse to http://192.168.1.1/cgi-bin/luci/mini/system/upgrade/ LuCI Upgrade URL
  • Upload image file for sysupgrade to LuCI
  • Wait for reboot

If you don't have a GUI (LuCI) available, you can alternatively upgrade via the command line. Note: It is important that you put the firmware image into the ramdisk (/tmp) before you start flashing.

  • Login as root via SSH on 192.168.1.1, then enter the following commands:

The EA7500 is a dual firmware device. meaning that there are 2 firmware partitions and Linksys firmware is copied to both partitions at the factory. When you install/update the Linksys firmware, or install/update OpenWrt, the new firmware is always written to the other partition. Upon restarting the EA7500, it will subsequently try to boot from the newly installed firmware image from other partition.

If the device fails to boot after install or upgrade:

  1. Switch On and wait 15 seconds
  2. Switch Off and wait 10 seconds
  3. Repeat steps 1 and 2, three times, then go to 4.
  4. U-boot will switch automatically to the previous working firmware. You should be able to access your router on LAN, after some minutes to fully complete the boot process.

Although being a manual procedure, the above method can be used to toggle between the two firmwares on demand.

Warning: If you install/update OpenWrt more than once, both partitions will be overwritten with OpenWrt firmwares, and you won't be able to revert back to Linksys OEM firmware using above method.

For advanced users, as a last resort to recover the device, an experimental and low-level hardware approach is proposed by @GloooM, here.

Set up your Internet connection, configure wireless, configure USB port, etc.

port.serial general information about the serial port, serial port cable, etc.

The stock serial port is 1.8v. To use 3.3v either modify the board or use a level shifter with your 5v/3.3v TTL device. Flashing is possible with 3.3V uart (needs unsoldering and additional elements) and 1.8V uart (easier way, no unsoldering).

Alternatively if you don't feel like soldering 0201 resistors, you can use through-hole. Both resistors are simply pulling up the RX/TX lines to 3v3 so soldering resistors from pin 1 to pin 2 and pin 1 to pin 3 are equivalent:

Easy way to get serial access without soldering

The idea is very simple - using physical locks to create stable electrical contact. Time consuming - around 10 minutes.

The connectors

Parts needed:

  • USB serial adapter
  • plastic small cases with sizes like microSD card case and something small to put inside for better stabilization
  • staples for paper or long pins - depends on contact positions. staples with sharp end are better for horizontal connections, pins - for vertical connections.

Stage 1: build the “pyramids” - connect TTL cables with staples or pins. Case locks can be used for better connect - put the wires trough lock or near lock, isolated wires - through the lateral side of case. When you move the case or cable from outside the connection should remain strong.

Stage 2: fix the cable position with notebook, pliers etc - one movement can destroy all, so be careful.

Stage 3: connect pyramids to board, the most complex part. Don't panic! Find the shortest way to all contacts, do not pull the cable too much. Also, you can use any dielectric material for better stabilization, max 1-2, 'cause too many elements will close the overview.
