Cudy M1800

The Cudy M1800 is a Mesh system from Cudy, having Wifi 6 support and two Gigabit LAN ports. It is typically sold in pairs of two or three. Sometimes, the selling name includes AX1800 like in “Cudy AX1800 Whole Home Mesh WiFi System M1800”.

While there also existed a v1 version which is already EOL (End-of-Life), the V2 will have support until somewhat 2027 according to Cudy's support page.

None at this time.

There are two known options:

1) The Luci-based UI.

2) Press and hold the reset button during power up. The router will request 'recovery.bin' from a TFTP server at 192.168.1.88.

Both options require a signed firmware binary. The openwrt image supplied by cudy is signed and can be used to install unsigned images.

One can download the OpenWRT image at: http://www.cudytech.com/openwrt_software_download (https does not work on this page)

There is only an OpenWRT image for the M1800 v2. If you have a device which has a Firmware-Version of 2.x - this is the v2 version of the M1800.

Note: If you have a device with a 1.x Firmware version, the openwrt images are not accepted and there is no path forward to install OpenWrt on these EOL devices yet.

One can play around with the UI in the browser to get a feel using the Cudy emulator: https://support.cudy.com/emulator/M1800/

First you need to download the signed Cudy OpenWRT firmware from here: http://www.cudytech.com/openwrt_software_download

  • Browse to http://192.168.10.1/cgi-bin/luci/admin/panel
  • Click on Firmware
  • Upload cudy openwrt bin file to router
  • Wait for it to reboot
  • SSH to 192.168.1.1 and set a root password, or browse to http://192.168.1.1 if LuCI is installed.

Download the recovery.bin for your device from this page: http://www.cudytech.com/openwrt_software_download

  • Place the recovery.bin in the serving directory of your TFTP server
  • set your IP to 192.168.1.88
  • Press the “Reset” button of Cudy router and hold it. Before the Cudy router is powered on and before TFTP start to download the firmware, don't release the “Reset” button
  • Power on the Cudy router.
  • You can release the reset button only when the status LED flashes red and blue quickly, or when TFTP starts downloading firmware.
  • When the status LED turns solid red, the upgrade is complete.

generic.sysupgrade

FIXME These are generic instructions. Update with your router's specifics.

  • Browse to http://192.168.1.1/cgi-bin/luci/mini/system/upgrade/ LuCI Upgrade URL
  • Upload image file for sysupgrade to LuCI
  • Wait for reboot

If you don't have a GUI (LuCI) available, you can alternatively upgrade via the command line. There are two command line methods for upgrading:

  • sysupgrade
  • mtd

Note: It is important that you put the firmware image into the ramdisk (/tmp) before you start flashing.

sysupgrade

  • Login as root via SSH on 192.168.1.1, then enter the following commands:
cd /tmp
wget http://downloads.openwrt.org/snapshots/trunk/XXX/xxx.abc
sysupgrade /tmp/xxx.abc

mtd

If sysupgrade does not support this router, use mtd.

  • Login as root via SSH on 192.168.1.1, then enter the following commands:
cd /tmp
wget http://downloads.openwrt.org/snapshots/trunk/XXX/xxx.abc
mtd write /tmp/xxx.abc linux && reboot

Basic configuration After flashing, proceed with this.
Set up your Internet connection, configure wireless, configure USB port, etc.
