The NETGEAR WAX220 is a WiFi 6 802.11ax capable Access Point. It has a dual band 2×2 2.4 GHz radio, 3×3 5 GHz radio. It can be powered via PoE+ (802.3at) and has a single 2.5 Gbps Ethernet port.

FIXME

OEM easy installation

This device can be flashed using the OEM web interface firmware upgrade mechanism.

  • Navigate to Management → System Manager → Firmware
  • Under Firmware Upgrade select Browse choose the ...netgear_wax220-squashfs-factory.img image file then press Upload
  • The file size of exactly 10MB is to bypass a minimal size check of the web interface. You can check the successful upload by comparing the MD5 checksum.
  • Press Proceed to start the firmware upgrade to OpenWrt!
  • Flashing takes about 20 seconds. Note that the OEM web interface won't realize the change to OpenWrt, hence your browser will be stuck at firmware flashing screen (continuously showing “Waiting for changes to be applied...”).
  • If the power LED started flashing but the LAN LED is powered off and you cannot access the 192.168.1.1, power cycle the router.
  • When both power LED is flashing and LAN LED is on, simply Log into your router running OpenWrt as normal.

OEM installation using the TFTP method

generic.flashing.tftp

  • Download the OpenWrt initramfs image. Copy the image to a TFTP server and rename it to `openwrt.bin`
  • Connect the TFTP server to the WAX220. Conect to the serial console, interrupt the autoboot process by pressing '0' when prompted.
  • Download & Boot the OpenWrt initramfs image.
  $ setenv ipaddr 192.168.2.1

  $ tftpboot openwrt.bin
  $ bootm
  • Wait for OpenWrt to boot. Transfer the sysupgrade image to the device using scp and install using sysupgrade.
  $ sysupgrade -n <path-to-recovery.itb>

nmrpflash can be used to TFTP without opening the case.

If you don't have a GUI (LuCI) available, you can alternatively upgrade via the command line. There are two command line methods for upgrading:

  • sysupgrade

Note: It is important that you put the firmware image into the ramdisk (/tmp) before you start flashing.

  • Login as root via SSH on 192.168.1.1, then enter the following commands:

nmrpflash can be used to flash back the OEM firmware. Note that the OpenWrt specific rootfs overlay does not get erased by this method. To completely remove OpenWrt run the following commands *before* using nmrpflash:

# ubirmvol /dev/ubi0 -N rootfs_backup
# ubirename /dev/ubi0 rootfs_data rootfs_backup

Note: We can't delete rootfs_data at runtime. But deleting kernel_backup volume will trigger a recreation of both _backup volumes, which will automatically overwrite the rootfs_data (now rootfs_backup) named volume.

Basic configuration After flashing, proceed with this.
Set up your Internet connection, configure wireless, configure USB port, etc.
