Install OpenWrt (generic explanation)

These devices were “cloud-connected” with automatic upgrades and therefore today it's rare to find devices running anything other than the latest Cisco firmware. This means your only possible means of installation is likely to be to use the JTAG connector (though this not difficult; a method using only a Raspberry Pi is described below)

In the event that you have an older device, methods A/B/C may work. You can find which version of the firmware is on your device by running the command “odm fw_version” on the serial connection. If this command reports as “UNRECOGNIZED”, it means a modern firmware is running and JTAG must be used.

Please use the table below to find out which to use:

If none of the flashing methods work for you or your device, then you will need to JTAG your device.

There is a 14 pin EJTAG connector present, the pinout is the same as regular 14 pin JTAG.

There are two methods described for JTAG programming this device; they are:

1. Hookup UART and Ethernet to the MR18, with the Ethernet directly wired to your local machine. This is also done to prevent the MR18 from reaching the internet.

2. Once you have your UART console open hold down “s” on your keyboard, and plug in the power to the MR18. After a bit, you should then be dropped into a limited root shell.

3. From here, you will next need to bootstrap the rootfs filesystem. To do this, you will want to run the following command:

4. Note that at this point the console will sit empty, as this is normal. You will now want to copy and paste the following script into the console:

5. Once the code is copied, you can press CTRL+D to exit, which should take you back to a command prompt. Now make the script executable and run it:

6. You should now be back to a new root prompt, but with working network connectivity. At this point, you'll want to download the firmware image for the MR18 from the repo at https://github.com/riptidewave93/Openwrt-MR18/releases and then extract the files to the root of your local webserver. Once this is done and you have verified that the 2 images are extracted and in the webroot folder, you can download the initramfs image to the MR18 and flash it:

7. If both commands above completed without error, then you have successfully flashed the initramfs image to your device! To boot this, you will then want to unplug the power from the MR18, hold down “2” on your keyboard, and then plug in power to your MR18. This will then boot up the OpenWrt initramfs build.

NOTE: In the initramfs image, you may notice wifi does not work. This is because the factory MR18 firmware does not properly populate the UBI caldata partition with the required information, but we will take care of this shortly.

Second Note: If you are unable to boot to the initramfs by holding “2” down, this normally means you are not holding “2” at the right time. You need to hold this down at the exact same time power is applied to the MR18 for the bootloader to recognize the input.

8. Now that we have the initramfs build working, you'll want to browse to http://192.168.1.1/ which should then take you to the LuCI web interface. From here, you can just press login to enter as no password is set. Now, just go to the System Upgrade tab, and select the downloaded sysupgrade image named openwrt-ar71xx-nand-mr18-squashfs-sysupgrade.tar. Once selected, de-select the save config option and then press Upgrade. Once on the confirmation page, go ahead and flash the image.

9. This will remove the stock Meraki kernel, flash OpenWrt, fix the caldata partition if needed, and auto-expand rootfs_data to use the rest of the UBI free space.

1. Hookup UART to the MR18. No ethernet should be plugged in.

2. On the MR18, hold down the reset button for 12~ seconds. The LED should start blinking, and then turn off. After the LED turns off, release the reset button. This will remove any configurations on the device. Let the MR18 reboot.

3. At this point you should be at a <Meraki> Prompt once the device reboots.

4. At this point, you will want to enter:

odm help

5. If you get a “UNRECOGNIZED COMMAND LOGGED TO CLOUD SERVERS.” reply, then please try holding the reset button to do another reset of the device. If you continue to get this message, then sadly your firmware version is NOT rootable using this method.

6. If you got a “Help” output for the “odm” command, then run the following commands:

odm serial_num read

7. At this point the output should show “Q2XX-XXXX-XXXV” and your device should have it’s LED’s flashing. Now pull the power from the device, hook up the ethernet connection (connected to a local web server; no connection to the Internet!) and hold down “s” on your UART console when you power back on the device.

8. After a bit, you should then drop to a initramfs root shell, and the device is pwned! Now carry on with "Flashing Method A", point 6.

Confirmed working on: Firmware Build 22-140575, Build 22-149780, Build 23-162921, Build 23-188206.

Note: This method requires the use of another router, or setting up a DHCP server on your local system.

1. Wire up UART to your Meraki MR18.

2. Hook up your MR18 to a router, and disconnect the router from the internet. DO NOT ALLOW THE MR18 TO TOUCH THE INTERNET DURING THIS PROCESS! This is important as the most reliable way to do this exploit is to have the MR18 use DHCP to get an IP on the same network as your personal computer.

3. Hold the reset button on the MR18 for 10+ seconds. You should see the LED blink, and then turn off. Once the LED turns off you can stop holding the reset button. This does a “Level 2” reset and removes any configs from the access point.

4. From your personal computer that has UART wired to the MR18, plug into the same router the MR18 is using. Then, remember the IP address of your system. In this example, we will use 192.168.1.102.

5. Once the MR18 booted, start a HTTP server (on port 80) on your personal computer in the same directory as the firmware files. If you are running linux, this can be done using the below example:

6. Once started, you can then load this image to the “part2” partition on the MR18. This is done with the following:

odm firmware part2 192.168.1.102:80/lede-ar71xx-nand-mr18-initramfs-kernel.bin

Note that the above command may timeout, depending at what state your router is during the boot process. If it times out or fails, just wait 60 seconds and try again. Normally the best time to run the command is when the LED on the MR18 is green or flashing orange.

7. Once complete, remove power from the Meraki MR18. Now that power is removed, in your UART session hold down “2” on your keyboard while applying power. This should now boot you into the initramfs image you just flashed to the MR18.

8. Unplug the MR18 from your router, and directly wire your computer to it. Once wired, you should get a IP from the MR18.

9. Now that recovery is flashed, open a browser on your computer and navigate to http://192.168.1.1. Once signed into LuCI, you can then flash the current sysupgrade image for the MR18 (see "installation" section).

10. Once flashed, your MR18 should reboot and be fully running OpenWrt/LEDE!
