Install OpenWrt (generic explanation)

OpenWrt can easily be installed using mtd-write via ssh/telnet.

OEM easy installation

Installation via the OEM web interface is currently not possible. The easiest way to install the factory image is using the mtd-write tool over ssh or telnet.

Steps

1. Go to Administration settings in the web interface and enable ssh access.

2. Connect to ssh and login by using the same credentials you used to login to the web interface (“admin” is used in the example below).

3. Download the factory image to the filesystem.

4. Verify the transferred image before flashing. A truncated or corrupted transfer makes mtd-write silently do nothing and the router simply boots back into the stock firmware. Compare the file size and checksum against the values published on the download server:

5. Flash the image to the “Kernel” partition and reboot

The target partition is Kernel (the stock ASUS partition name), not firmware.

Under the stock ASUS firmware there is no partition named firmware, and mtd-write -i <image> -d firmware fails with a segmentation fault. The firmware partition only exists once OpenWrt is running. Check the available partition names with cat /proc/mtd before flashing.

Do not run mtd-unlock, and do not target Kernel2.

6. If the reboot was too graceful (i e too long time between mtd-write and reboot) there is a chance that the kernel will panic and the router won't reboot. In this case just perform a forceful reboot with a physical button or power cycle the device.

7. The device should now boot OpenWrt.

OEM installation using the U-Boot TFTP method

To use this method you need access to the serial port inside the router.

Steps:

  • Configure your PC with IP 192.168.0.2
  • Set up TFTP server and put the squashfs-factory.bin image on your PC
  • Connect serial port(rate:115200) and turn on AP, then interrupt “U-Boot Boot Menu” by hitting any key
    • Select “2. Upgrade firmware”
    • Press enter when you see “Run firmware after upgrading? (Y/n):”
    • Select 0 for TFTP method
    • Input U-Boot's IP address: 192.168.0.1
    • Input TFTP server's IP address: 192.168.0.2
    • Input IP netmask: 255.255.255.0
    • Input file name: openwrt-ramips-mt7621-asus_4g-ax56-squashfs-factory.bin
  • Restart router after you see the log entry “Firmware upgrade completed!”

Asus 4G-AX56 is using Winbond W29N01HV, a 1 Gbit (128 MB) NAND SLC flash chip.

Stock ASUS layout (before flashing OpenWrt)

The partition names and numbering under the stock ASUS firmware differ from the OpenWrt layout shown below. This is the layout you are looking at when running the mtd-write install command, so note that there is no firmware partition at this stage — the 50 MiB firmware slot is called Kernel. Output of cat /proc/mtd on stock 3.0.0.4.382_45718:

The stock Kernel partition and the OpenWrt firmware partition occupy the same offset (0x3e0000) and size (0x3200000), which is why writing the factory image to Kernel from stock produces a working OpenWrt installation. Kernel2 and jffs2 are left untouched by OpenWrt.

Do not run fw_setenv on this device. It does not edit the boot configuration — it creates one, and the one it creates does not boot.

The u-boot-env partition is erased when the device leaves the factory (all 0xff across the full 384 KiB). U-Boot therefore runs from its compiled-in defaults, which are bootcmd=mtkautoboot, bootdelay=0, ipaddr=192.168.1.1.

Because there is nothing to read, fw_printenv reports Warning: Bad CRC, using default environment and then prints uboot-envtools' own generic fallback values — bootcmd=run distro_bootcmd, ipaddr=192.0.2.1, ethaddr=02:00:11:22:33:44. None of those belong to this board, and the output looks perfectly plausible.

The first fw_setenv call commits that entire generic set to flash with a valid CRC. U-Boot then honours it instead of its defaults. distro_bootcmd does not exist in this bootloader, so the device stops booting — and it takes both recovery paths with it, because the TFTP server and rescue mode are reached through mtkautoboot.

A user reporting exactly this outcome: forum thread, post 152. Tracked as issue #24976; the env config is removed in PR #24977.

The same applies to the ASUS RT-AX53U and RT-AX54, which share this bootloader and layout.

  • Upload image file for sysupgrade to LuCI
  • Wait for reboot

If you don't have a GUI (LuCI) available, you can alternatively upgrade via the command line.

Note: It is important that you put the firmware image into the ramdisk (/tmp) before you start flashing.

Login as root via SSH on 192.168.1.1, then enter the following commands:

The bootloader runs a TFTP server that accepts a firmware upload over Ethernet. This is the recovery method that works on this device, and it needs neither serial access nor opening the case.

  • Power the router off.
  • Hold the reset button down, power the router on, and keep holding until the power LED flashes slowly. That slow flash is rescue mode (as described in the ASUS manual).
  • Release the button. The bootloader now listens on 192.168.1.1 — this is its compiled-in default (ipaddr=192.168.1.1, serverip=192.168.1.2).
  • Give your PC a static address on the same subnet, e.g. 192.168.1.10/24, and connect it to a LAN port.
  • Upload the image, either with ASUS's Firmware Restoration utility or with any TFTP client:

  • Wait until the power LED stops flashing, then power-cycle the router.

Both OpenWrt factory images and ASUS stock .trx firmware can be restored this way, so this is also the route back to stock.

If the transfer reports 0 bytes sent, suspect the host firewall rather than the router. The bootloader's TFTP server replies from an ephemeral UDP port, so a rule that only permits outbound UDP/69 silently drops the response. On Windows the interface must additionally be on a Private (not Public) network profile.

The “OEM installation using the U-Boot TFTP method” described further up requires opening the case and attaching a serial console. It has additionally been reported not to work against the stock firmware, in a case where ASUS rescue mode did work. Prefer rescue mode.

Do not attempt to repair a non-booting device with fw_setenv — on this board that is what causes the problem rather than fixing it. See the warning under Flash Layout.

failsafe_and_factory_reset

Verified on hardware (HW rev A1, OpenWrt 25.12).

  • Set your PC to a static address such as 192.168.1.10/24. Failsafe runs no DHCP server, so a PC left on DHCP falls back to a 169.254.x.x address and will not reach the router.
  • Connect the PC to LAN port 1 — see the warning below, the other ports do not respond.
  • Power-cycle the router and watch the white power LED.
  • When the power LED starts blinking, tap the WPS button a few times. The window is 4 seconds (fs_failsafe_wait_timeout=4 in /lib/preinit/00_preinit.conf).
  • Success is signalled by the power LED switching to a rapid, even blink — the timer trigger at 50 ms on / 50 ms off — and staying there.

Either button works, since the preinit hotplug rule matches any button event rather than a specific one, but WPS is the safer choice: a long press on reset is the factory-reset gesture.

With a serial console attached you can instead press f followed by Enter when prompted.

No password is set in failsafe.

Failsafe generates throwaway SSH host keys each time it is entered, so your client will report a changed host key and refuse to connect. Bypass the check for that one connection rather than deleting your known_hosts entry:

Only LAN 1 responds. Preinit assigns 192.168.1.1 to the first LAN port and does not build a bridge, so lan2, lan3, lan4 and the WAN port stay down and unaddressed. Observed in failsafe on this device:

The overlay is deliberately left unmounted, so none of your configuration is in effect — which is exactly what makes it useful when a bad setting has locked you out:

The address is 192.168.1.1 whatever you had configured, and the hostname becomes OpenWrt-failsafe.

To change anything, mount the overlay read-write first:

/etc is then writable and you can repair the offending setting, for example uci set network.lan.ipaddr=192.168.1.1 && uci commit network. Alternatively firstboot resets the overlay to defaults — this erases all configuration. Leave failsafe with:

reboot -f

Basic configuration After flashing, proceed with this.
Set up your Internet connection, configure wireless, configure USB port, etc.

The ASUS 4G-AX56 has the following buttons:

The Fibocom FG621-EA sits on the internal USB bus as 2cb7:0a05 and presents four serial ports (/dev/ttyUSB0/dev/ttyUSB3) alongside a CDC-NCM network interface (usb0).

There are two ways to bring it up. The NCM method needs no changes to the modem at all; the RNDIS method below writes settings that persist inside the modem.

Using NCM (no modem changes)

The factory USB composition already exposes NCM, and automatic connection does not need to be enabled. Queried on a unit that has never been reconfigured:

OpenWrt dials the modem itself, so no AT commands are required.

The stock image for this device does not ship the NCM protocol handler, so install it first (opkg install on releases before 25.12):

Until PR #24974 is merged, comgt carries no profile for this modem and proto ncm fails with UNSUPPORTED_MODEM. Add the profile by hand to /etc/gcom/ncm.json, alongside the other vendor keys — minding the JSON commas, as the last entry takes none:

An APN is only sent if you set one (uci set network.wwan.apn='your.apn''), so on carriers that assign a default bearer the interface comes up without it.

PR #24975 adds this interface, the LEDs and the modem GPIO switches to the board definition. Once it and #24974 are both merged, a clean install brings the modem up with no configuration at all. The steps above are then only needed on an existing install upgraded with settings preserved, since board defaults are applied on first boot only.

Using RNDIS

The modem also supports RNDIS and ECM. Switching to RNDIS requires two AT commands:

Then create a DHCP interface on the usb0 device and assign it to the WAN firewall zone. See using RNDIS modems.

These settings are stored inside the modem and survive reinstalling OpenWrt. Reverting them means sending AT+GTAUTOCONNECT=0 and AT+GTRNDIS=0,1 yourself, or reflashing the modem firmware from stock. Use AT+GTUSBMODE to change the USB composition.

ModemManager also works as an alternative to either method.

Modem firmware

The Fibocom modem runs its own firmware, independent of the router firmware and unaffected by flashing OpenWrt. Check the installed version with:

which replies with something like 16121.1000.00.01.01.39. (AT+GTPKGVER? returns ERROR on this modem — use AT+CGMR or ATI.)

Units have been seen shipping with ...01.43. Several reports on the forum associate that build with the router hanging on reboot and needing a physical power cycle, with a downgrade to ...01.39 reported to resolve it. Treat that as a mitigation rather than a cure: a hang has also been observed once on .39.

ASUS publishes only the .39 package. It is genuinely hard to find because ASUS lists it on the support page as an unlabelled row with no product name or description, unlike the equivalent entry for the 4G-AC86U. Direct link:

The .43 build does not appear to be published anywhere. ASUS's own firmware-listing API returns the same single LTE firmware (dated 2022/01/14) across all ten regional sites checked, the CDN has no other matching file, and neither MikroTik's FG621-EA images nor Fibocom's download centre carry it. It appears to have been factory-flashed only.

Modem firmware can only be flashed from the stock ASUS firmware — OpenWrt has no path to it. A downgrade therefore means: restore stock via ASUS rescue mode, update the modem from the stock web interface, then reinstall OpenWrt.

Warranty

  • Remove the two screws hidden by the backside label.
  • Use a knife and/or screwdriver to loosen the hatches.
