Meeting notes - 19th October 2021 virtual meeting
Date: 19th October 2021
Participants: Daniel, Paul, lach1012, rsalvaterra, pepe2k, Adrian, Rafał, stintel, Hauke
Next release preparation (Paul)
- Core updates done:
- musl 1.2.2
- binutils 2.37
- GCC 11.2
- something is not booting up after the GCC 11.2 update
- Kernel 5.10
- Overall good progress since last meeting, 15 of 39 targets now run 5.10
- Missing progress:
- bcm47xx
- Hauke will have a look at it
- Rafał will also look at it too (this week)
- bcm4908
- Rafał will do this this week
- pistachio
- Hauke will have a look at it
- Firewall4
- Currently collected affected packages and asking for testing
- Open PR on GitHub https://github.com/openwrt/openwrt/pull/4642
- upnp currently depends on hard coded iptables calls (Daniel will give nftables-wrapper a shot)
- ipset for bann ip is missing (Paul will contact the maintainer)
- The iptables over nftables user space wrapper could solve some of these scenarios
- size comparison between iptables and nftables based system (Paul will check)
- upstream works on allowing to attach eBPF to an nftables rule
- Split mvebu 32 bit?
- Do performance benchmark (wireguard, openssl speed, cryptsetup benchmark, NAT?)
- Arm Neon support could be activated, could improve wireguard performance, 32 vs. 16 register FPU
- Does the kernel already do automatic detection? Would only user space be affected like ffmpeg.
- The packages for both versions are already building for other targets
- Old discussion: https://github.com/openwrt/openwrt/pull/3079
- mac80211 update to kernel 5.15 base
- Hauke will send patches for testing soon
- update wireless regulatory database
- currently we do not support any Wifi 6E (6GHz) devices. Intel client works.
When adding / renaming a target just merge it and ask someone to restart (reconfigure just restart) the build bots
Upgrade server ASU (Paul)
- Instance running at https://sysupgrade.openwrt.org/
- Slowly get some traction, worked stable since the last meeting
next meeting
- Next meeting should have an ics event.
- Paul will create one next time
- we want to have this meeting once a month
- suggested was to have it every 30 days to rotate the day
- Paul will do a new poll for November in about 4 to 5 weeks
External toolchain
- Currently broken
- Switch to same compression as ImageBuilder/SDK
- Change compression format to tar.xz
Video Feed
- Add by default?
- You can connect video over USB or SPI to mostly every device
- Daniel just tried it, but will probably not maintain Wayland forever
- Just to show that it is working
- Do not build it every time, for example only every 10th build
21.02.1 point release
- Should be done to fix Let's Encrypt
- Jow fixed the update servers, this is working. The rest of the Internet still causes problems
- Hauke will do a point release in the next few days
- Will do it together with Paul
Add some package maintainers to this meeting?
- currently this meeting is very focused on core stuff, the focus could shift
- option: add package maintainers 1 hour later
Voting is still a problem, we should improve it
- We think currently we need the absolute majority of all members to add a new member
- Maybe add a quorum
- Probably a time frame how long the vote is open (~3 weeks)
- Keep the new member vote still separate form other votes
- Adrian will propose a change to the rules on the mailing list and we can vote on this
Suggest an inactive member status
- Members can voluntarily change to inactive member status
- inactive members do not have voting rights
- If an inactive member wants to get active again they can change the status without a vote
- Daniel will propose this on the mailing list
How to get to know what cool things others do
- Write a blog?
- specific area in the forum?
- Some people are interested to write something
- Paul will setup a blog
