The D-Link COVR-X1860 are MT7621-based AX1800 devices (similar to DAP-X1860, but with two Ethernet ports and external power supply) that are sold in sets of two (COVR-X1862) and three (COVR-X1863).

To get OpenWRT support, a private key from the GPL tarball has been extracted, which is used to create firmware images, which can be flashed in the normal non-recovery mode. After this, hardware support for this device will be added. Custom builds and a patchset is available from the following forum thread

Installation

Installing OpenWrt

Option 1: recovery mode (simple, requires chromium-based browser and paper clip or similar)

Install a Chromium-based browser on the PC (Chrome, Edge, etc.)
Download recovery firmware image
Connect router and computer with a LAN cable (plug into the “Ethernet” port of the COVR-X1860)
Set the IP of the PC to 192.168.0.10 and subnet mask to 255.255.255.0
Using a pointed object such as a paper clip or SIM card tool, press the reset button on the bottom of the router while simultaneously plugging in the router (and holding for a few seconds). The cross at the top of the device will blink red, once the device entered recovery mode.
Open the Chromium browser on the PC and enter the IP 192.168.0.1 in the URL

Option 2: web interface (update menu)

use factory install image (which is signed correctly)
Connect router and computer with a LAN cable (plug into the “Ethernet” port on the COVR-X1860)
Login to the web interface with the password “password”
move through the UI jungle for first config
enter Management → upgrade
upload factory image (browser should not matter here, but chromium is recommended)
Open the Chromium browser on the PC and enter the IP 192.168.0.1 in the URL

Note: After installing OpenWRT you need to use the port labled “Ethernet” to connect to the web interface.
