NBG6515

Supported: WAN/LAN through plain OpenWrt; WLAN with EEPROM information dump from original firmware

  • Has TFTP bootloader capabilities, can be tested without flashing.
  • Make copies of your original firmware through a TFTP-booted instance of OpenWrt, in particular of the factory/mtd2 partition.
  • WLAN currently works only with the EEPROM data from the factory/mtd2 contents from the original firmware, please preserve it.
  • Currently no way to return to stock firmware; only firmware upgrade images are released from manufacturer.
  • Possible to flash with existing images (see below) via TFTP
  • TTL Serial: J1 next to USB port. Order of pins from USB towards LEDs: [VCC 3.3V][GND][TX][RX]
  • TTL Serial connection: 57600, 8N1 (e.g., picocom -b 57600 /dev/ttyUSB0 with TTL-USB-adapter)

Describe if there are any ongoing activities that might lead to OpenWrt support.

  • A dedicated device profile is being worked on. A preliminary patch which fixes previous MT76x0E errors can be found here: https://pastebin.com/HxyK4zsu (details on how to build below)
  • 2.4Ghz WLAN works with the RaLink driver: rt2x00 in conjunction with data from the mtd2 partition of the original firmware (detailed instructions below).
  • The overlayFS only works after flashing the sysupgrade image from inside a running OpenWrt system, e.g. one that has been started via TFTP boot

Testing and installation of OpenWrt is currently only supported by the TFTP option with the TTL serial connection. It requires opening the case and soldering pins to the TTL serial port J1.

  1. Download https://downloads.openwrt.org/releases/19.07.4/targets/ramips/mt7620/openwrt-19.07.4-ramips-mt7620-mt7620a_mt7530-initramfs-kernel.bin and place on TFTP server of your computer, change name to something short without “.”, e.g., nbg6515-init
  2. Download https://downloads.openwrt.org/releases/19.07.4/targets/ramips/mt7620/openwrt-19.07.4-ramips-mt7620-mt7620a_mt7530-squashfs-sysupgrade.bin and have it ready on our computer if you would like to flash OpenWrt without wireless support; currently no way to recover to original firmware!
  3. It is advisable to read the instructions until the end. This is not an automated install yet.

Since wireless is not working with only the free drivers in OpenWrt but requires a bit of data from the original firmware, it is essential to it to preserve the original firmware. This can be achieved by running OpenWrt from TFTP without flashing and writing out the contents of the flash memory e.g., through LuCi (flashing and backup page).

  1. Void your warranty and open the router; screws below rubber pads at the bottom.
  2. Solder three pins on the J1 connector (GND, RX, TX).
  3. Connect to TTL-USB adapter, connect the adapter to PC.
  4. picocom -b 57600 /dev/ttyUSB0 (or equivalent to open serial console)
  5. Power on the NBG6515 and check original bootlog. This ends with a Zyxel console “ELX” - no idea what one could do here.
  6. Power off and hold key “1”: TFTP boot from image loaded to RAM
  7. Specify IPs: first IP being asked is the IP of the router.
  8. Second IP is your host PC (TFTP server).
  9. Connect an ethernet cable between any of the yellow LAN ports and your PC.
  10. Make sure to enter the exact image name you have waiting on your TFTP server (no does in filenames allowed).
  11. After confirming the image name (e.g., nbg6515-init) the image will load to RAM and boot.
  12. OpenWrt bootlog should stall; press enter to see the OpenWrt shell
  13. Activate DHCP on your computer, the router should provide an IP address in the 192.168.1.x range and self-assign 192.168.1.1
  14. Open a web browser at 192.168.1.1 to run LuCi
  15. Go to the backup/flash page and make backups of the mtd devices; it might be possible to flash it back and restore the original state.
  16. Keep the resulting downloads (in particular mtd2) safe so you can use it later.
  17. If you plan to permanently install OpenWrt, do so by flashing the previously downloaded “sysupgrade” image.
  18. The bootloader offers an alternative option “2” to directly flash an image to the internal flash memory; follow the instructions from the bootloader.
  1. After booting into OpenWrt, open an ssh session and verify that you have a working overlayfs: ssh root@192.168.1.1 then mount (should reveal a line about overlayfs) and df -h should reveal /dev/mtdblock6 with approx. 4 MB space.
  2. To make sure that overlayfs is functional, create a new directory by mkdir /root/testdir, then reboot and verify that the directory you created is still there by ls -l /root.
  3. While checking the boolog on the serial terminal you may have seen an error in the rt2800_ lines. The driver complains about missing EEPROM information.
  4. In LuCi, you will not see any wireless interface.
  5. Use scp to copy the mtd2 file you preserved from the original firmware to the /tmp/ RAMFS, e.g. from a DHCP client computer connected via LAN: e.g., scp mtd2.bin root@192.168.1.1:/tmp/

  7. Extract the firmware from the image: dd if=/tmp/mtd2.bin of=/lib/firmware/soc_wmac.eeprom count=1, check with ls /lib/firmware/ that there is a file called soc_wmac.eeprom with a size of 512 bytes.
  8. reboot and watch the bootlog, you should now see that the error message about the EEPROM has disappeared.
  9. After logging into LuCi, you can now use the WLAN as usual.

Note: OpenWRT source contains patches that add device-tree tags in the rt2x00 driver. “ralink,eeprom=soc_wmac.eeprom” it shouldn't be to much work to modify those to read data from the mtd-partitions similarly to what the mt76x0 driver does. it would provide a more smooth install experience for tinkerers.

This section assumes you have read and understood in detail what is explained above and why. Enabling the 5GHz radio requires that you know how to patch the source tree of OpenWRT. It is also asumed that the “Factory” partition is still intact, as the MT7610E-eeprom data is further in compared to the 2.4GHz one.

The preliminary patch adds a (very much w.i.p) device profile to the configuration menu and a new device tree that is based on the two evaluation boards that already exist upstream. “mt7620a_mt7530” “mt7620a_mt7610e”

  1. Clone the OpenWRT source tree to a directory of your choosing.
  2. Download the patch and apply using patch -Np1 -i <path-to-patch> Link if you need a guide
  3. Now configure the source tree as described here: | Build System (Note that if you need to install luci as a feed-package if you want a webgui)
  4. If you have already completed the previous section enabling 2.4 wireless, you can run mkdir -p files/lib/firmware in the source tree and then copy soc_wmac.eeprom to that folder and it will get baked into the finished sysupgrade automatically.
  5. Depending on your hardware the build could take a while, but when it finishes you should have a sysupgrade file that looks similar to this: bin/targets/ramips/mt7620/openwrt-ramips-mt7620-zyxel_nbg6515-ac750-squashfs-sysupgrade.bin
  6. If done correctly, the produced build can be flashed onto the device as described in the previous installation section. Note however that the compatability-identifier is changed in the patch so you have to do a force-flash.
