Ubiquiti LiteBeam 5AC Gen2

Ubiquiti LiteBeam 5AC Gen2 (LBE-5AC-Gen2) is a dual band outdoor PoE CPE packed inside feedhorn that attaches to small directional reflector included in the package. airOS utilizes 2.4GHz wifi as a management radio only, thus it's performance and range are less than 5GHz wifi.

Installation

The firmware for this Ubiquiti device is signed. Device came with airOS fw version WA.v8.5.7.38314.180628.1036 and downgrading to v8.5.0 is not possible! In this case it is required to download same airOS fw version from ubnt website that came with device. This method is valid up to the latest fw version WA.v8.5.12.40181.190213.1104

Proceed as follows:

  1. Upload original firmware to /tmp directory on the device, in this case WA.v8.5.7.38314.180628.1036.bin
  2. Start the update process with the following command:
    cd /tmp
    fwupdate.real -m WA.v8.5.7.38314.180628.1036.bin -d

    and interrupt the process after approx. 2-3 seconds - once it reaches checking of mtd3.

  3. Remove original fw from tmp directory and upload openwrt sysupgrade image to the same tmp directory.
  4. Flash devices kernel and rootfs partitions using commands:
    dd if=openwrt-ath79-generic-ubnt_litebeam-ac-gen2-squashfs-sysupgrade.bin of=/dev/mtdblock2 bs=64K count=16
    dd if=openwrt-ath79-generic-ubnt_litebeam-ac-gen2-squashfs-sysupgrade.bin of=/dev/mtdblock3 bs=64K skip=16
  5. Power-cycle the device and once it boots OpenWrt reflash it again from LuCI webinterface with the same sysupgrade image if you get many jffs2 eraseblock messages in kernel log.

Installation via U-Boot, TFTP and serial console

  1. Configure your TFTP server with IP 192.168.1.254
  2. Connect serial console and power up the device
  3. Hit any key to stop autoboot
  4. tftpboot 0x81000000 openwrt-ath79-generic-ubnt_litebeam-ac-gen2-initramfs-kernel.bin
  5. bootm 0x81000000
  6. copy openwrt-ath79-generic-ubnt_litebeam-ac-gen2-squashfs-sysupgrade.bin to /tmp
  7. sysupgrade /tmp/openwrt-ath79-generic-ubnt_litebeam-ac-gen2-squashfs-sysupgrade.bin
