Ubiquiti Edgerouter 4

Under Construction!
This page is currently under construction. You can edit the article to help completing it.

FIXME Any text with a light background (like this one) provides instructions for creating the Details Page. When you have filled in correct/useful information (instead of any template that's there) remove the instructions, as well as the <WRAP> that encloses it.

The Ubiquiti EdgeRouter 4 is a powerful router based on the Cavium Octeon III platform. The quadcore MIPS64 CN7130 can do gigabit routing. The EdgeRouter 4 offers three regular gigabit Ethernet ports and one SFP port in a modest form factor and a fanless design. Cavium is a Marvell subsidiary since 2018.

FIXME

  1. This is an empty template that suggests the information that should be present on a well-constructed Device Page. This means, that you have to fill it with life and information.
  2. There are several “fixme” tags with text on a light background (like this text) throughout this template. As you fill in the page, remove those tags so that people can judge its completeness.
  3. When there are no more “fixme” tags left, delete this one too, along with the <WRAP> that encloses it.
  • Please include only model specific information, omit bla,bla and put everything generic into separate articles
  • If you have no time to write certain stuff, link to docs
  • base-system should lead the way, do not explain this again
  • DO NOT provide a complete howto here! Instead groom the general documentation.

- Connect a serial cable using the front RJ45 port (115200 baud, 8N1)

USB flash drive method

- Download the initramfs-kernel.bin and sysupgrade.tar images to a USB flash drive that is formatted as vfat/fat32
- Connect the flash drive to the Edgerouter's front USB port
- Reboot or power on the Edgerouter
- Interrupt the uboot process by pressing any key
- Start USB detection by typing

usb start

- Load the initramfs-kernel to memory by typing

fatload usb 0:1 0x20000000 openwrt-21.02.3-octeon-ubnt_edgerouter-4-initramfs-kernel.bin

- Once loaded, load the image by typing

bootoctlinux 0 numcores=4 endbootargs mem=0

This should have booted the factory image and now prompts you the OpenWrt banner
- Mount the USB flash drive for the sysupgrade image by typing

mkdir /tmp/sda
mount /dev/sda1 /tmp/sda

- Flash OpenWrt to the internal flash by finally typing

sysupgrade /tmp/sda/openwrt-21.02.3-octeon-ubnt_edgerouter-4-squashfs-sysupgrade.tar

That's it! The Edgerouter should now be booted to OpenWrt from its internal flash.

FIXME Find out flash layout, then add the flash layout table here (copy, paste, modify the example).

Please check out the article Flash layout. It contains examples and explanations that describe how to document the flash layout.

There is currently no way to install OpenWrt through the Ubiquiti web interface. The possibilities of this happening are rather slim, given the firmware checks Ubiquiti tends to implement.

generic.sysupgrade

FIXME These are generic instructions. Update with your router's specifics.

  • Browse to http://192.168.1.1/cgi-bin/luci/mini/system/upgrade/ LuCI Upgrade URL
  • Upload image file for sysupgrade to LuCI
  • Wait for reboot

If you don't have a GUI (LuCI) available, you can alternatively upgrade via the command line. There are two command line methods for upgrading:

  • sysupgrade
  • mtd

Note: It is important that you put the firmware image into the ramdisk (/tmp) before you start flashing.

sysupgrade

  • Login as root via SSH on 192.168.1.1, then enter the following commands:
cd /tmp
wget http://downloads.openwrt.org/snapshots/trunk/XXX/xxx.abc
sysupgrade /tmp/xxx.abc

mtd

If sysupgrade does not support this router, use mtd.

  • Login as root via SSH on 192.168.1.1, then enter the following commands:
cd /tmp
wget http://downloads.openwrt.org/snapshots/trunk/XXX/xxx.abc
mtd write /tmp/xxx.abc linux && reboot

Basic configuration After flashing, proceed with this.
Set up your Internet connection, configure wireless, configure USB port, etc.

The default network configuration is:

Interface Name Description Default configuration Remarks
br-lan LAN bridge 192.168.1.1/24 The bridge interface covers lan1 through lan3. Lan3 is the SFP port.
lan0 WAN port DHCP
Port Switch port
Internet (WAN) eth0
LAN 1 eth1
LAN 2 eth2
LAN 3 eth3 (SFP)

DANGER: HIGH VOLTAGE inside!
Opening this device exposes
parts under high voltage (110/230 VAC)!

  • Risk of deadly electrical shock
  • Risk of irreversable damage to other components attached, e.g. your PC connected via serial

Make sure to keep your fingers, conductive tools and serial cables away from the high voltage at all times!

Capacitors can still retain dangerous voltages
after disconnection from mains!

Continue at your own risk!

Note: This will void your warranty!

Four crosshead screws are present on the backside of the router, unscrew the two screws located on the corners of the metal plate. The screws next to the AC plug should not be unscrewed. Finally, slide the topside of the case horizontally and carefully lift the top of the case. No warranty-void stickers present of any kind.

port.serial general information about the serial port, serial port cable, etc.

There is a RJ45 console port located on the front panel of the EdgeRouter 4 marked as 'console'.
The console cable needs to be a Cisco standard compatible console cable in order to work.
