TP-Link Archer VR400

Devices with Broadcom WiFi chipsets have limited OpenWrt supportability (due to limited FLOSS driver availability for Broadcom chips). Consider this when choosing a device to buy, or when deciding to flash OpenWrt on your device because it is listed as supported. See Broadcom WiFi for details.

DSL will not work at all on devices with BCM63xx DSL chipset (due to unavailability of FLOSS driver for Broadcom chips). Consider this when choosing a device to buy, or when deciding to flash OpenWrt on your device because it is listed as supported.
See Broadcom DSL, Unsupported: DSL modem and Broadcom BCM63xx for details.

The TP-Link VR400 is an 400MHz dual-core Broadcom MIPS-based ADSL2+/VDSL2 router with 802.11bgn / 802.11ac wireless and DSL support. It has a 4-port switch (3x LAN 100Mbit, 1x WAN 1Gbit) and (1x DSL port).

Install OpenWrt (generic explanation)

You will need:

  • A TTL Serial Port to change the firmware.
  • A TFTP server in your computer
  • OpenWrt factory image (it comes with CFE at the header)
  1. Configure a static IP on the computer e.g: 192.168.1.7
  2. Put the openwrt-factory.bin in a TFTP server in the computer
  3. Power on the router with the serial console connected
  4. While initializing the bootloader press any key to reach the CLI
  5. At the CFE command line, execute the command:
    f 192.168.1.7:openwrt-factory.bin image
  6. Wait until it finish.
  7. ssh to 192.168.1.1 and set a root password, or browse to http://192.168.1.1 if LuCI is installed.

generic.sysupgrade
Use the sysupgrade image.

If the sysupgrade command doesn't work, you can upgrade using the mtd command instead. It is important that you put the firmware image into the ramdisk (/tmp) before you start flashing.

  • From the bootloader:
    1. Download the original firmware
    2. Stop the bootloader with the serial console
    3. Flash the OEM firmware using the CFE web UI:
      http://192.168.1.1
  • From OpenWrt:
    1. Download the original firmware
    2. Strip out the head (tplink header+ CFE):
      dd if="Archer_VR400v1_0.1.0_0.9.1_up_boot(160613)_2016-06-13_11.54.44.bin" bs=$((0x20200)) skip=1 of=backtooem.bin
    3. Copy the file backtooem.bin into the /tmp directory
    4. Flash the firmware:
mtd write /tmp/backtooem.bin linux && reboot

Basic configuration After flashing, proceed with this.
Set up your Internet connection, configure wireless, configure USB port, etc.

The default network configuration is:

Interface Name Description Default configuration
br-lan LAN & WiFi 192.168.1.1/24
eth0 switch vlan1, vlan2
eth0.1 vlan1: LAN1, LAN2, LAN3 bridged
eth0.2 vlan2: LAN4/WAN WAN, dhcp
n/a WiFi unsupported

BCM435F is the pseudo-id used for the integrated wifi of BCM6362/63268 SoCs, for which no usable driver exists!
