The TP-Link RE650 is a dual-band 4×4 MIMO 802.11a/n/ac (5GHz)/4×4 MIMO 802.11b/g/n (2.4GHz) “range extender” with a single Gigabit Ethernet port, powered by an internal power supply. As usual with range extenders the whole unit is designed to be plugged directly into a wall outlet.

The TP-Link RE650 has been produced in two revisions, “1.0” and “2.0” (labeled “v1” and “v2” by OpenWrt). The revisions are easily distinguishable by the label on the device: it states “1.0” or “2.0” next to the region code. Hardware-wise the revisions are largely identical, the main difference being the v2 revision only offering half of the flash memory (8 MB vs. 16 MB).

For now, this TOH page only deals with the v1 revision, the v2 revision has its own TOH page.

  • set your PC to a static IP in the 192.168.0.x range (e.g. 192.168.0.2)
  • connect your PC to the ethernet port on the side of the unit
  • open the web interface at http://192.168.0.254/
  • navigate the web interface to Settings > System Tools > Firmware Upgrade
  • for good measure, compare the revision (i.e., “1.0” for v1) is shown as “Hardware Version”
  • upload the OpenWrt factory.bin image and confirm

The flashing process takes about 90 seconds, the first boot of OpenWrt will take a minute, subsequent boots are much faster. You can now reset your PC's IP address to DHCP or a static 192.168.1.x address and, as is common, access OpenWrt on the device at 192.168.1.1.

generic.sysupgrade

FIXME These are generic instructions. Update with your router's specifics.

  • Browse to http://192.168.1.1/cgi-bin/luci/mini/system/upgrade/ LuCI Upgrade URL
  • Upload image file for sysupgrade to LuCI
  • Wait for reboot

If you don't have a GUI (LuCI) available, you can alternatively upgrade via the command line. There are two command line methods for upgrading:

  • sysupgrade
  • mtd

Note: It is important that you put the firmware image into the ramdisk (/tmp) before you start flashing.

sysupgrade

  • Login as root via SSH on 192.168.1.1, then enter the following commands:
cd /tmp
wget http://downloads.openwrt.org/snapshots/trunk/XXX/xxx.abc
sysupgrade /tmp/xxx.abc

mtd

If sysupgrade does not support this router, use mtd.

  • Login as root via SSH on 192.168.1.1, then enter the following commands:

mtd write /tmp/xxx.abc linux && reboot

Basic configuration After flashing, proceed with this.
Set up your Internet connection, configure wireless, configure USB port, etc.

Numbers 0-3 are Ports 1-4 as labeled on the unit, number 4 is the Internet (WAN) on the unit, 5 is the internal connection to the router itself. Don't be fooled: Port 1 on the unit is number 3 when configuring VLANs. vlan0 = eth0.0, vlan1 = eth0.1 and so on.

Note: This will void your warranty!

Remove the 4 T6 screws in the back side of the device and pry with a spudger along the front border of the case (prying along the back border will reveal the psu connector and the heat sink, that is held in place by three phillips screws on the other side of the motherboard).

The serial port connector and the spi flash chip are on the front side and there's no need to remove the heat sink or remove the main board from the case to reach them.
