TP-Link Archer C6U v1 (EU)

Under Construction!
This page is currently under construction. You can edit the article to help completing it.

Dual Band wireless 5GHz and 2.4GHz. Based on MediaTek chipset. Four 1Gbit LAN ethernet ports + One 1Gbit WAN ethernet port.

TP-Link Archer C6U (EU)

None at this time.

Before setting up this router, do NOT connect it to the internet. Prevent it from activating the TP-Link cloud feature. Connect a cable using an ethernet LAN port to a computer with a ethernet port. The default IP of the router will be http://192.168.0.1, a DHCP server is active by default. If you have ever used your browser to setup this router once, there is a problem with a permanent redirect in the web GUI which will prevent you from login in with the correct password. (you will see a login loop using the correct password but no message that indicates a problem. When typing a wrong password it will show a popup box complaining). The simple remedy is to flash your router in an anonymous browser window, which will not be subject to the permanent redirect problem.

You can install OpenWRT from the firmware that comes with the C6U. To do so, click on the Advanced tab, choose System Tools from the left side menu, and pick Firmware Upgrade from the submenu options. In the main window, under Manual Upgrade, click Browse. Select the OpenWRT firmware file downloaded (see previous section). The filename may be of the form openwrt-21.02.1-ramips-mt7621-tplink_archer-c6u-v1-squashfs-factory.bin. you do not need to rename the file.

In two of three test cases it was observed that the System Tools menu did not contain the Manual upload firmware section. To enable this menu, After setting the admin password after first boot, you have to change the router Operation Mode in the menu. Just select whatever mode that is not selected. It will reboot the router and when you login again and navigate to the System Tools menu, you will see the Firmware Upgrade submenu now. In 1 test case, this problem did not happen.

If you happen to need to reset the router to it's defaults, keep the reset button pressed for 10 seconds and watch the LED behavior change, release and let it boot. These routers reboot fast.

For configuring the router after installing OpenWrt, follow the base-system documentation

Specific values needed for tftp

FIXME Enter values for “FILL-IN” below

Bootloader tftp server IPv4 address FILL-IN
Bootloader MAC address (special) FILL-IN
Firmware tftp image Latest OpenWrt release (NOTE: Name must contain “tftp”)
TFTP transfer window FILL-IN seconds
TFTP window start approximately FILL-IN seconds after power on
TFTP client required IP address FILL-IN

generic.sysupgrade

FIXME These are generic instructions. Update with your router's specifics.

  • Browse to http://192.168.1.1/cgi-bin/luci/mini/system/upgrade/ LuCI Upgrade URL
  • Upload image file for sysupgrade to LuCI
  • Wait for reboot

If you don't have a GUI (LuCI) available, you can alternatively upgrade via the command line. There are two command line methods for upgrading:

  • sysupgrade
  • mtd

Note: It is important that you put the firmware image into the ramdisk (/tmp) before you start flashing.

sysupgrade

  • Login as root via SSH on 192.168.1.1, then enter the following commands:
cd /tmp
wget http://downloads.openwrt.org/snapshots/trunk/XXX/xxx.abc
sysupgrade /tmp/xxx.abc

mtd

If sysupgrade does not support this router, use mtd.

  • Login as root via SSH on 192.168.1.1, then enter the following commands:
cd /tmp
wget http://downloads.openwrt.org/snapshots/trunk/XXX/xxx.abc
mtd write /tmp/xxx.abc linux && reboot

Basic configuration After flashing, proceed with this.
Set up your Internet connection, configure wireless, configure USB port, etc.

FIXME Please fill in real values for this device, then remove the EXAMPLEs

The default network configuration is:

Interface Name Description Default configuration
br-lan EXAMPLE LAN & WiFi EXAMPLE 192.168.1.1/24
vlan0 (eth0.0) EXAMPLE LAN ports (1 to 4) EXAMPLE None
vlan1 (eth0.1) EXAMPLE WAN port EXAMPLE DHCP
wl0 EXAMPLE WiFi EXAMPLE Disabled

In the current release this router is using the DSA (Distributed Switch Architecture) switch architecture. See dsa for more information

LAN ports are labeled in OpenWrt as they are on the router itself e.g : lan1-lan4 and the WAN port is wan, the ethernet switch is eth0 The physical numbering on the ports matches this.

hardware.button on howto use and configure the hardware button(s). Here, we merely name the buttons, so we can use them in the above Howto.

The TP-Link Archer C6U has the following buttons:

BUTTON Event
Reset reset
WPS wps

Front:
archer_c6u_v1.jpg

Back:
archer_c6u_v1_back.jpg

Backside label:
archer_c6u_v1_label.jpg

Note: This will void your warranty!

  • Unscrew the 2 screws at the back
  • The top cover snaps firmly in place so it still be quite stuck, you will need to pry it open close to the sides by inserting a hard (plastic) spoon to make the case more wide and then pry the cover upwards. Focus on one side, move a bit, repeat and after a few times, the cover will come of easily.
