TP-Link Archer C2600 v1.x

Wireless-AC router based on QCA IPQ8064 with 32MB flash and 512MB RAM.

Archer C2600

  1. On version 1.0 of this device, OpenWrt can be loaded from the router's standard firmware upgrade page. To be safe, use the relevant openwrt-xx.xx.x-ipq806x-generic-tplink_c2600-squashfs-factory.bin, then after initial installation, use the openwrt-xx.xx.x-ipq806x-generic-tplink_c2600-squashfs-sysupgrade.bin and deselect to keep settings. Verified 2020/12/19 by Rygle on device version 1.0 from factory software Build 20150610 Rel. 32140 to OpenWrt 19.07.5 without any issues.
  2. On Version 1.1 of this device, the factory default username and password doesn't work. Hence the need to use TFTP to load OpenWrt.
  3. Some units with “v1.1” physical label are recognized in software as “v1.0”. Installing OpenWrt by uploading the factory image via the standard firmware upgrade page works for these models. (2022/03 using OpenWrt 21.02.2)
  4. Reset to admin/admin reported working if reset button held down while switching on the device

I can confirm points 3 and 4. My device has a phisical label v1.1, but with TP-Link firmware 2017-03-06 it showed v1.0 on the admin page. So I reset the admin user's password to admin, then using the standard firmware upgrade page I installed openwrt-22.03.6-ipq806x-generic-tplink_c2600-squashfs-factory.bin without a problem.

Specific values needed for tftp

Press and hold the reset button. Then turn on the device. Continue to hold the reset button for 15 seconds or until TFTP transfer occurs:

TFTP server IP address Set PC to static IPv4 192.168.0.66, subnet mask 255.255.255.0, as this is where the router looks for the TFTP server.
LAN Port to connect LAN 1 works, probably any of LAN ports 1-4.

Note: Make sure the router and the PC are connected directly, not through a switch (more info)

  • Browse to http://192.168.1.1/cgi-bin/luci/admin/system/flash/ LuCI Upgrade URL
  • Upload image file for sysupgrade to LuCI
  • Wait for reboot

If you don't have a GUI (LuCI) available, you can alternatively upgrade via the command line. There are command line method for upgrading:

  • sysupgrade

Note: It is important that you put the firmware image into the ramdisk (/tmp) before you start flashing.

  • Login as root via SSH on 192.168.1.1, then enter the following commands:

If you are experimenting with C2600 and you flash the wrong firmware and the device doesn't boot, you can restore the factory firmware:

  • Set PC to fixed ip address 192.168.0.66, default gateway to 192.168.0.1, and netmask to 255.255.255.0
  • Download factory firmware from TP-Link and rename it to ArcherC2600_1.0_tp_recovery.bin
  • Start a tftp server with the file ArcherC2600_1.0_tp_recovery.bin in its root directory
  • Turn off the router
  • Press and hold Reset button
  • Turn on router with the reset button pressed and wait ~15 seconds
  • Release the reset button and after a short time the firmware should be transferred from the tftp server
  • Wait ~5 minute to complete recovery.

Basic configuration After flashing, proceed with this.
Set up your Internet connection, configure wireless, configure USB port, etc.

Numbers 4-1 are Ports 1-4 as labeled on the unit, number 5 is the Internet (WAN) on the unit, 0 and 6 is the internal connection to the router itself. Don't be fooled: Port 1 on the unit is number 4 when configuring VLANs. vlan0 = eth0.0, vlan1 = eth0.1 and so on.

Known differences between Hardware v1.1 and v1.0:

  • Flash chip used in v1.1 is changed (but same size).

Per default the device uses wireless firmware and kernel module by Candela Technologies. In some cases, where WiFi does not perform as expected, the driver can be swapped to the non-candelatech alternative. The non-candelatech driver contains mainly close-source-software with drawbacks.

opkg update && opkg remove ath10k-firmware-qca99x0-ct kmod-ath10k-ct && opkg install ath10k-firmware-qca99x0 kmod-ath10k

Instead of switching to the closed-source driver a variant of the candelatech driver can be tried first (firmware remains the -ct type):

opkg update && opkg remove kmod-ath10k-ct && opkg install kmod-ath10k-ct-smallbuffers

To go back to the default drivers:

opkg update && opkg remove ath10k-firmware-qca99x0 kmod-ath10k kmod-ath10k-ct-smallbuffers
opkg update && opkg install ath10k-firmware-qca99x0-ct kmod-ath10k-ct
