PC Engines APU

APU system boards are designed and manufacturered by PC Engines. Boards are based on AMD Bobcat low consumption APUs. The boards and other components (enclosures, power supplies, wireless cards, CompactFlash cards, etc) are sold separately, although some retailers sell pre-build kits.

APU boards and associated accessories are readily available from resellers across Europe and North America.

See also PC Engines APU 2 for the next generation of APU boards.

The generic combined x86 OpenWrt package (http://downloads.openwrt.org/attitude_adjustment/12.09/x86/generic/openwrt-x86-generic-combined-ext4.img.gz) works on the APU 1C4 (booted from 16GiB SD-Card).

  • All three NICs are recognized and seem to work (only tested eth0 so far)
  • WiFi card on miniPCIe successfully tested with Qualcomm WLE200NX, Atheros AR928X
  • mSATA working (in my case: Skymedi SK6368)
  • SATA HDD untested
  • GPIOs untested
  • UMTS card (miniPCIe) with SIM slot untested
  • LED for the NIC apparently not working as expected (1G/100M indication)

The APU board exists in two revisions 1C and 1D, with two memory setups 2GB or 4GB:

  • APU 1C: 3 LAN / 2 GB DRAM / T40E CPU (deprecated)
  • APU 1C4, 3 LAN / 4 GB DRAM / T40E CPU (deprecated)
  • APU 1D, 3 LAN / 2 GB DRAM / T40E CPU
  • APU 1D4, 3 LAN / 4 GB DRAM / T40E CPU

Changes between 1C and 1D revisions are minor. Revision 1D features : a better SATA header power, a more stable LAN support and corrects minors issues.

All boards feature:

  • CPU: AMD G series T40E, 1 GHz dual Bobcat core with 64 bit support, 32K data + 32K instruction + 512K L2 cache per core.
  • DRAM: 2 or 4 GB DDR3-1066 DRAM. Soldered on board.
  • Storage: Boot from SD card (connected through USB), external USB or m-SATA SSD. 1 SATA + power connector.
  • 12V DC, about 6 to 12W depending on CPU load. Jack = 2.5 mm, center positive.
  • Connectivity: 3 Gigabit Ethernet channels (Realtek RTL8111E).
  • I/O: DB9 serial port, 2 USB external + 2 internal, three front panel LEDs, pushbutton.
  • Expansion: 2 miniPCI express (one with SIM socket), LPC bus, GPIO header, I2C bus, COM2 (3.3V RXD / TXD).
  • Board size: 6 x 6“ (152.4 x 152.4 mm) - same as ALIX.2D13 and WRAP.1E.
  • Firmware: CoreBoot (please contact support@pcengines.ch for source code if desired).
  • Cooling: Conductive cooling from the CPU and south bridge to the enclosure using a 3 mm alu heat spreader (included).

AC/DC is 12v. Previous PC Engines boards were 18v. If you plug the APU to a 18v AC/DC, it will fry. Only use 12v AC/DC.

The following kernel modules are needed:

  • Realtek RTL8111/8168B PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet : r8169
  • Intel i2c: i2c_core + i2c_piix4
  • USB: usbcore + usb_storage
  • SATA support: libata, libahci,ahci
  • SP5100 TCO Timer/Watchdog (allowing waking up): sp5100_tco
  • LPC bus: Is used for recovery using BIOS plug. Could it be used for parallel port. Driver?
  • GPIO headers: ?
  • Push button: ?
  • Mini PCI-Express: ?
  • ACPI: ?

For transparency, board schematics are available. This is a very nice initiative from PC Engines, which makes it a very good and long support board for OpenWR:

Since the board can be put in the same box as the PCEngines Alix 2d13-Board it might be useful to know that the ethernet device order has changed. The interfaces are now ordered as shown in the following image:

WARNING: this is the generic X86 image, not the optimized image.

To install the image on a USB key or SD card, simply copy it after gunzipping:

zcat openwrt-x86-generic-combined-ext4.img.gz | dd of=/dev/sdX bs=16k

Of course, make sure to select the right `/dev/sdX`, so that you don't overwrite your own hard disk...

You should then be able to boot off the USB key or SD card. If it doesn't work, see “troubleshooting” below.

With the generic image, only the first port (eth0, the one close to the serial port) is active. You should configure the other ports as appropriate.

This benchmark is done with the generic x86 BB image (no SMP, i686). One laptop is attached to eth0, and runs iperf towards a second laptop attached to eth1.

The onboard BIOS can be upgraded to a more recent version, see the generic article for PC Engines APUs here

SuperSSpeed S238 16GB mSATA SSD cards provided by PC Engines are faulty and suffered from bad firmware. Firmware was updated, but with no real luck. PC Engines and resellers are now providing new SSDs. Upgrade to a new SSD in case of problem.

The reboot command in OpenWrt does not work correctly. After the reboot is issued, the APU seems to shutdown but does not come back up. After the initial message PC Engines APU BIOS build date: Apr 5 2014 the boot process does not continue. After a power cycle the APU boots normally.

UPDATE: this issue has been fixed in BIOS from Jul 8 2014

This probably happens because you have a SSD plugged in.

If you're booting from an SD card or USB stick as soon as the SSD is detected the boot loader will switch to it and disable the USB/SD boot and the system will hang.

This means that you cannot bootstrap an empty SSD by booting from a USB stick and formatting the SSD.

Once you boot successfully from the SSD, you can plug in a USB stick and it will be detected normally.

The APU runs coreboot as it's bootloader.

Warning! The Coreboot serial console runs at 115200 Baud 8N1. OpenWrt then switches to 38400 Baud 8N1.

The APU does not include a traditional BIOS like other computers usually do. It includes Seabios which was originally developped for virtual environments. It is being used by the APU as main bootloader. You should be aware that it supports no password protection and developers of Seabios do not plan to add password support.
