Installation from stock firmware is as simple as uploading the OpenWrt …factory.img via the stock firmware updater (Advanced→Administration→Firmware Update).

The stock firmware will throw an error message warning that the new firmware is older, click Okay to continue. Then click Yes to upload. After reboot OpenWrt should be installed.

  • Browse to /cgi-bin/luci/admin/system/flash on LuCI. E.g. http://192.168.1.1/cgi-bin/luci/admin/system/flash if your OpenWrt instance lives at 192.168.1.1.
  • Click the button “Flash image...” at the bottom of the page
  • Upload an image file for sysupgrade to LuCI and follow the steps on screen.
  • (Optionally) verify the hash of the image LuCI received with the expected hash value. The expected hashvalues for images can be found at https://downloads.openwrt.org/releases/<release-version>/targets/ramips/mt7621/ where <release-version> is the version of the current release, e.g. 23.05.2.
  • Wait for reboot

If you don't have a GUI (LuCI) available, you can alternatively upgrade via the command line. There are two command line methods for upgrading:

  • sysupgrade
  • mtd

Note: It is important that you put the firmware image into the ramdisk (/tmp) before you start flashing.

sysupgrade

  • Login as root via SSH on 192.168.1.1, then enter the following commands:
cd /tmp
wget http://downloads.openwrt.org/snapshots/trunk/XXX/xxx.abc
sysupgrade /tmp/xxx.abc

mtd

If sysupgrade does not support this router, use mtd.

  • Login as root via SSH on 192.168.1.1, then enter the following commands:
cd /tmp
wget http://downloads.openwrt.org/snapshots/trunk/XXX/xxx.abc
mtd write /tmp/xxx.abc linux && reboot

Basic configuration After flashing, proceed with this.
Set up your Internet connection, configure wireless, configure USB port, etc.

Numbers 0-3 are Ports 1-4 as labeled on the unit, number 4 is the Internet (WAN) on the unit, 5 is the internal connection to the router itself. Don't be fooled: Port 1 on the unit is number 3 when configuring VLANs. vlan0 = eth0.0, vlan1 = eth0.1 and so on.

Note: This will void your warranty!

Note: This is copied from the higher specification Netgear WAX206, but should be the same.

Note that the right side panel cannot be removed without removing the pcb mounting screws (internal access)!

To open the case, the bottom stand must first be removed, there are two screws holding it on. These screws will prevent the left side panel from being removed. Next pry the left side panel free. This panel is held to the main body with plastic clips, I used a plastic pry bar around all the edges and shims to prevent re-latching while working.
