This device uses the same OEM image as other two (R6260 and R6850)

It appears that the PCB is identical, the main difference seems to be in the external antennas.

OpenWrt can be installed from OEM/factory using the standard firmware update method.

Notes:

  • You do not need to factory reset the router if it has been previously configured, but the flash of openwrt*-factory.bin will reset configuration.
  • If in factory reset state, disconnect WAN cable and bypass netgear's genie first-time install to access the firmware update page.
  • When flashing from OEM to *-factory.bin, the router may warn you that this firmware is an older version than currently installed: it is ok to proceed.
  • Flash and reboot takes about 3 minutes

Confirmed upgrade from factory v1.1.0.28_1.0.1 to OpenWrt 22.03.5

Specific values needed for tftp

ASSUME BRICK OCCURES FOR ALL FLASHING METHODS!!

USE nmrpflash FOR UNBRICK (Working on Linux) )

  • Browse to http://192.168.1.1/cgi-bin/luci/admin/system/flash LuCI Upgrade URL
  • Upload image file for openwrt*-sysupgrade.img to LuCI
  • Wait for reboot

If you don't have a GUI (LuCI) available, you can alternatively upgrade via the command line. There are two command line methods for upgrading:

  • sysupgrade
  • mtd

Note: It is important that you put the firmware image into the ramdisk (/tmp) before you start flashing.

sysupgrade

  • Login as root via SSH on 192.168.1.1, then enter the following commands:
cd /tmp
wget http://downloads.openwrt.org/snapshots/trunk/XXX/xxx.abc
sysupgrade /tmp/xxx.abc

mtd

If sysupgrade does not support this router, use mtd.

  • Login as root via SSH on 192.168.1.1, then enter the following commands:
cd /tmp
wget http://downloads.openwrt.org/snapshots/trunk/XXX/xxx.abc
mtd write /tmp/xxx.abc linux && reboot

Netgear router must be connected to your network using an Ethernet cable. The computer running nmrpflash must be connected to the same network, using either Wi-Fi or Ethernet.

Numbers 0-3 are Ports 1-4 as labeled on the unit, number 4 is the Internet (WAN) on the unit, 5 is the internal connection to the router itself. Don't be fooled: Port 1 on the unit is number 3 when configuring VLANs. vlan0 = eth0.0, vlan1 = eth0.1 and so on.
