  1. Download OpenWrt firmware named openwrt-bcm47xx-mips74k-netgear-r6200-v1-squashfs.chk and verify checksum
  2. Login to the web GUI at routerlogin.net with your web browser.
  3. Inside the “Advanced” tab, the “Router Upgrade” is under the “Administration” drop down menu
  4. In the Router Upgrade page, Select the firmware downloaded with Browse or the textbox and press “Upload”
  5. Your router should reboot with OpenWrt installed.
  1. Setup the device that will send the firmware to the settings below
  2. Connect the router to a serial console and start the router
  3. Press Ctrl+C into the terminal as the router starts to cancel boot
  4. Once there is a prompt you can enter “tftp” and CFE will wait until it receives the firmware and flash the power LED amber
  5. Using a TFTP Client “put” the firmware to the router and the router will reboot after it finishes
  6. Watch the serial console to verify success

Instructions modeled after the NETGEAR support page “How to upload firmware to a NETGEAR router using TFTP client?”

Specific values needed for TFTP

Firmware Image Use the image for the OEM Easy Install
Default Gateway/Router IP 192.168.1.1
Client IP Address 192.168.1.10
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
TFTP Port 69

generic.sysupgrade

Upgrade using the same binary as the one to initally install with, netgear_r6200-v1-squashfs.chk

  • Browse to http://http://192.168.1.1/cgi-bin/luci/admin/system/flash LuCI Upgrade URL
  • Upload image file for netgear_r6200-v1-squashfs.chk to LuCI
  • Wait for reboot

If you don't have a GUI (LuCI) available, you can alternatively upgrade via the command line using:

  • sysupgrade

Note: It is important that you put the firmware image into the ramdisk (/tmp) before you start flashing.

sysupgrade

  • Login as root via SSH on 192.168.1.1, then enter the following commands:
cd /tmp
wget https://downloads.openwrt.org/(Version)/targets/bcm47xx/mips74k/openwrt-bcm47xx-mips74k-netgear_r6200-v1-squashfs.chk
sysupgrade /tmp/openwrt-bcm47xx-mips74k-netgear_r6200-v1-squashfs.chk

Follow “OEM installation using the TFTP method” for Debricking.

Basic configuration After flashing, proceed with this.
Set up your Internet connection, configure wireless, configure USB port, etc.

The default network configuration is:

  1. 5GHz WiFi is unsupported due to no driver support (b43 and brcmfmac/smac)
  2. The LEDs need a workaround for proper color and lighting
  3. Currently the LEDs for Power and Internet/LAN operate but only partially as both stay amber
