NETGEAR R6100

The Netgear R6100 is an 802.11ac Dual Band WiFi router with 5 10/100 Ethernet ports. It also has a USB 2.0 interface.

Netgear R6100

Please check out the article flash.layout. It contains an example and a couple of explanations.

This section deals with how you install OpenWrt from a device freshly opened. Plus the steps required such as reset to factory defaults if the device has already been configured

Note: Reset router to factory defaults if it has been previously configured.

  • Browse to http://192.168.1.1/adv_index.htm
  • Select Administration, then Firmware Upgrade from menu to left of screen.
  • Select browse and locate the openwrt-15.05-ar71xx-nand-r6100-ubi-factory.img file
  • Select the Upload button
  • The firmware file will be validated and the current firmware version and the uploaded version will be displayed.
  • Select the Yes button to transfer the firmware file to the router.
  • Wait for upload to finish and router to reboot
  • Telnet to 192.168.1.1 and set a root password, or browse to http://192.168.1.1 if LuCI is installed.

generic.flashing.tftp

The bootloader contains a “firmware recovery” mode where it acts as a TFTP server. Firmware recovery mode can be entered by holding down the reset button while turning the power on. The power LED will first light steady orange, then flashing orange, and finally flashing green. At that point the bootloader is ready for firmware recovery and you can release the reset button. (Firmware recovery can also be initiated by typing “fw_recovery” at the bootloader serial console.)

In firmware recovery, the router's IP address is 192.168.1.1. Connect to one of the LAN ports and set your PC to a static address in the 192.168.1.X range. Use a TFTP client to PUT an .img file to the router, either stock firmware or a “factory” OpenWrt binary. Be sure the TFTP client is using “binary” mode. Once the file has transferred, the router will flash it and reboot automatically.

For a how-to on Windows, have a look at How to upload firmware to a NETGEAR router using TFTP.

generic.sysupgrade

If you have already installed OpenWrt and like to reflash for e.g. upgrading to a new OpenWrt version you can upgrade using the mtd command line tool. It is important that you put the firmware image into the ramdisk (/tmp) before you start flashing.

LuCI Web Upgrade Process

  • Browse to http://192.168.1.1/cgi-bin/luci/mini/system/upgrade/ LuCI Upgrade URL
  • Upload image file for sysupgrade to LuCI
  • Wait for reboot

Terminal Upgrade Process

  • Login as root via SSH on 192.168.1.1
  • Use the following commands to upgrade.
cd /tmp/
wget https://downloads.openwrt.org/chaos_calmer/15.05/ar71xx/nand/openwrt-15.05-ar71xx-nand-r6100-squashfs-sysupgrade.tar
sysupgrade /tmp/openwrt-15.05-ar71xx-nand-r6100-squashfs-sysupgrade.tar

Basic configuration After flashing, proceed with this.
Set up your Internet connection, configure wireless, configure USB port, etc.

The default network configuration is:

Interface Name Description Default configuration
br-lan LAN & WiFi 192.168.1.1/24
vlan1 (eth1) LAN ports (1 to 4) DHCP Server
eth0 WAN port DHCP
wlan0 WiFi (2.4GHz) Disabled
wlan1 WiFi (5GHz) Disabled

The numbers labelled on the case do not match the logical port numbers. If you use VLANs, pay attention to this numbering scheme.

Physical port Switch port
Ethernet 1 2
Ethernet 2 3
Ethernet 3 4
Ethernet 4 1
CPU (eth1) 0

The yellow “Internet” port is connected directly to the other CPU port, eth0. It is not part of the switch.

hardware.button on howto use and configure the hardware button(s).

The Netgear R6100 has three buttons. They are Power, WiFi On/Off and WPS. Here, we merely name the buttons, so we can use them in the above Howto:

Note: This will void your warranty!

Remove the three obvious screws in the bottom. Separate the front cover from the rest of the case by releasing two clips on each side and three across the top. The board faces away from the front cover, to access the serial port etc. remove the board from the back half of the case being careful not to stress the antenna cables.

port.serial general information about the serial port, serial port cable, etc.

The serial port is a 4 pin header on the board above the WAN port and next to the smaller shield box that contains the 5 GHz radio. Pins on the port are from top (closest to the antennas) to bottom (closest to the Ethernet ports): +3.3V, TX(from router), RX(to router), Ground. The bootloader uses a baud rate of 115200 N81.
