Note: R7500 V1 5GHz Wireless does not work with stock images. V1 uses a Quantenna QT3840BC + QT2518B wireless chipset. That seems to be improving for this chipset (QSR1000) in Kernel 4.21 (2018-12)

Installation

Install OpenWrt (generic explanation)

Tested on R7500v1 model:

  1. Download the OpenWrt install .img file for your model
  2. Reset to factory default by navigating to “Advanced → Administration → Backup Settings” and selecting “Erase”
  3. Once the router has finished rebooting, login to default IP (192.168.1.1) and navigate to “Advanced → Administration → Router Update”
  4. Select “Browse” and input the path to the OpenWrt firmware you downloaded previously, and then click “Upload”
  5. Click “OK” and “Yes” on the confirmation windows, and then wait for the router to finish updating and rebooting
  6. Login to default IP (again 192.168.1.1) and configure

Debricking

R7500V1
I. Preffered non-invasive method

  1. power off the device
  2. power on the device with pressed “reset” button and keep holding the “reset” button for 15 seconds.
  3. The power on led will start blinking in “white” and the router will start tftp service listening on IP address 192.168.1.1 for FW file upload via tftp. You can release the “reset” button.
  4. Under Linux OS you can upload the FW with command(your PC should be from 192.168.1.0/24 network):

“tftp -m binary 192.168.1.1 -c put openwrt-ipq806x-generic-netgear_r7500-squashfs-factory.img”
- The power led will turn off for about 1 minute, after that into red and will start the boot process.

III. Invasive method via serial port

  1. Hook up serial reader from computer to pin headers on the router.
  2. Cancel boot process.
  3. Type help command.
  4. Run the firmware recovery command.
  5. Router will wait for tftp.
  6. Use Cygwin or linux to tftp put the OEM firmware to the device. Use the binary option. IP should be 192.168.1.1
  7. Do not attempt to use easy to use tftp windows programs. They don't work as well as good old tftp command.
  8. Router will reboot when done and you'll be welcomed by the default OEM setup page when you connect through a browser.

Note: This will void your warranty!

Remove all 4 rubber feet. Under each piece of rubber is a screw, remove screw. There is a 5th screw in the middle, not hidden, remove/loose screw. My screw would not remove, only loosen. Using a non-marring pry tool, run it around the top housing popping the top free. If your 5th/middle screw would only loosen, please note, it will fall out as you loosen the top. The “guts” of the router are attached to the top housing. Once loosened, the top and bottom should easily part. To access the serial pins, gently pull the board from the housing.
