The MTS WG430223 is a wireless router based on the MT7621 platform. While it can be acquired for relatively low cost (especially on avito.ru) compared to other units with similar specifications.

Install OpenWrt (generic explanation)

1. Login to the router web interface (superadmin:serial number)

2. Navigate to Administration → Miscellaneous → Access control lists & enable telnet & enable “Remote control from any IP address”

3. Connect to the router using telnet (default admin:admin)

4. Connect to the router using telnet shell (no password required)

5. Save MAC adresses to U-Boot environment:

6. Ensure that MACs were saved correctly:

7. Download and write the OpenWrt images:

 cd /tmp
 wget http://downloads.openwrt.org/snapshots/targets/ramips/mt7621/openwrt-ramips-mt7621-mts_wg430223-squashfs-factory.trx
 mtd_write erase /dev/mtd4
 mtd_write write factory.trx /dev/mtd4

8. Set 1st boot partition and reboot:

 uboot_env --set --name bootpartition --value 0

1. Login as root via SSH on 192.168.1.1, then enter the following commands:

 fw_setenv bootpartition 1
 reboot

2. Optional step. Upgrade the stock firmware with any version to overwrite the OpenWrt in Slot 1.

* MAC addresses hasn't been found neither in factory nor in other places

* /tmp/etc/config/.glbcfg contains serial number, WiFi preshared keys etc.

* arccfg util unencrypts (cipher aes-128-cbc + some obfuscation) the configuration from mtd8(10) at every boot

* U-boot protected by unknown password (hash 95f9f8f58a972c3bb653854cc54e85b4). Therefore, it isn't possible to load initramfs image or choose boot option except “3: Boot system code via Flash (default).”.

  • Browse to http://192.168.1.1/cgi-bin/luci/mini/system/upgrade/ LuCI Upgrade URL
  • Upload image file for sysupgrade to LuCI
  • Wait for reboot

If you don't have a GUI (LuCI) available, you can alternatively upgrade via the command line. There are two command line methods for upgrading:

  • sysupgrade
  • mtd

Note: It is important that you put the firmware image into the ramdisk (/tmp) before you start flashing.

sysupgrade

  • Login as root via SSH on 192.168.1.1, then enter the following commands:

Set up your Internet connection, configure wireless, configure USB port, etc.

bootloader

It's not recommended to change the original bootloader. You can easily brick your device.

Original Breed for Xiaomi R3G can be used, but breedenter utility is required to enter the Breed. Breed web interface shouldn't be used for flashing firmware or EEPROM backup or recovery. Telnet should be used instead.
