MikroTik RouterBOARD hAP ac² (RBD52G-5HacD2HnD-TC)

Small router with 5 gigabit ports, dual-band 802.11ac Wi-Fi, and a powerful quad-core ARM CPU.

The commercial name of the router is hAP ac² or sometimes hAP ac 2.

Generic Router

Early revisions seemed to ship with 256 MiB of RAM (see wikidevi). However, revisions available in 2019 only ship with 128 MiB of RAM.

Installation is done like other MikroTik devices: boot an initramfs image over TFTP, and if all works well, flash the final image using sysupgrade. Do NOT upgrade to RouterOS v7, its bootloader is not compatible with OpenWrt; if you upgraded, downgrade to RouterOS v6 before installing OpenWrt.

Warning: To boot OpenWrt on hAP ac², RouteurBoot needs BOOTP and doesn't support DHCP. The (Windows) TFTP Software Tiny PXE https://labalec.fr/erwan/?page_id=958 is able to do BOOTP (without DHCP) and is reportet to do well with Mikrotik Devices.

Install OpenWrt on MikroTik devices

Install OpenWrt (generic explanation)

Mikrotik Devices can be reverted to stock firmeware / be debricked in an easy way. Follow the instructions here: https://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/Manual:Reset and here https://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/Manual:Netinstall

Reset Button, the Mikrotik Netinstall tool and the right firmware file do the job. As Mikrotik uses different plattforms, be sure to get the right package. The hap ac2 is based on Router OS 6, ARM Plattform (32Bit)

Beware: After you flashed the stock firmware, the device has NO configuration. You must connect to the device with the help of Mikrotiks “Winbox” software which uses the MAC Adress (as the device has no IP) . After Connecting, restore the default configuration and reboot. Then you are ready to start all over again

The basic network interfaces of the hAP ac2 are 5 ethernet interfaces that are connected to the CPU via a switch integrated in the SoC ipq4018, plus two radio circuits, one for 2.4 GHz and one for 5 GHz. On the encasing they are designated #1 (Internet/PoE in), and #2 - #5 (LAN). Two VLAN IDs have been reserved: '1' for the LAN ports, '2' for the Internet/PoE port

Output from 'swconfig dev switch0 show'

VLAN 1:

vid: 1
ports: 0t 1 2 3 4

VLAN 2:

vid: 2
ports: 0t 5

Note that port 0 is the CPU, 5 the Internet/PoE port, and LAN #2 - #5 correspond to ports 4 - 1, so reverse order to what is printed on the casing. The default network and wireless configurations that are created provide for disabled wireless, Internet/PoE seeking a dhcp server, and #2 - #5 bridged and assigned 192.168.1.1. It is possible to define additional VLAN(s) and to assign LAN ports to them, taking them out of the eth0 bridge. Use other VLAN IDs than 1 and 2 as those are reserved.

Enable serial output

By default, no serial is shown during boot. To enable it, a value needs to be changed on the flash (you can do that from an OpenWrt initramfs image):

CHANGE position e030
