GL.iNet GL-X2000
The GL-X2000 (Spitz Plus) is a dual-SIM 4G LTE router based on the Qualcomm IPQ5018 SoC, with dual-band WiFi 6, one 1Gbit WAN, one 1Gbit LAN, a built-in Quectel EG120K-EA LTE Cat.12 modem, one USB 2.0 port, 512MB RAM and 128MB NAND flash storage.
Hardware Highlights
Installation
The GL-X2000 is supported in OpenWrt snapshots and is not yet part of a stable release. Snapshot images do not include the LuCI web interface; see LuCI essentials to install it.
LTE needs extra packages. The modem drivers are included, but uqmi (the default qmi protocol) cannot talk to this modem. After installing, run apk update && apk add modemmanager luci-proto-modemmanager and create a ModemManager interface for the modem. Alternatively, add both packages when building an image with the Firmware Selector.
The GL-X2000 ships with a modified fork of OpenWrt. Install official OpenWrt by flashing a factory image.
Installation using GL.iNet web UI
- Download the latest factory image for GL-X2000 from Firmware Selector.
- Browse to the manufacturer's web interface, default IP is 192.168.8.1.
- Go to the Upgrade page and use the factory image you downloaded. When prompted, select
Do not keep configuration. - This will flash and reboot the router into OpenWrt, default IP is now 192.168.1.1.
- After flashing, OpenWrt can be configured as described in the Quick Start guide.
For firmware updates always use sysupgrade images.
Recovery
OEM Recovery
The U-Boot web recovery works independently of running OpenWrt firmware, OEM firmware, or a bricked firmware. It accepts both the OpenWrt factory image and the GL.iNet stock firmware.
- Configure your computer Ethernet interface with a static IP address of 192.168.1.2.
- Connect an Ethernet cable from the LAN port of the X2000 to the Ethernet port of your computer.
- Unplug the power cord from the X2000.
- Press and hold the “Reset” button, then plug in the power lead while still holding the button.
- Keep holding the button for about 5 seconds, then release it.
- On your computer web browser, go to 192.168.1.1, you will see the “FIRMWARE UPDATE” page.
- Select your downloaded factory image and click Update firmware. Only upload firmware images here: this U-Boot also accepts calibration (ART) data, and overwriting it destroys the WiFi calibration and MAC addresses.
- The X2000 will reboot and you should be able to SSH into 192.168.1.1.
- Don't forget to set your computer back from static to DHCP when you have finished.
Serial recovery
With a serial console connected (see below), interrupt the bootloader by typing gl while it counts down. From there an initramfs image can be booted from a TFTP server at 192.168.1.2 without touching the flash:
setenv ipaddr 192.168.1.1; setenv serverip 192.168.1.2 tftpboot 0x44000000 openwrt-qualcommax-ipq50xx-glinet_gl-x2000-initramfs-uImage.itb bootm 0x44000000
From the running initramfs system, flash a sysupgrade image as usual. Do not run the lu command at the U-Boot prompt; it reflashes the bootloader.
Return to OEM
Flash GL.iNet's X2000 firmware image (from the GL.iNet download center) through OpenWrt's firmware upgrade page or with sysupgrade -n, making sure not to keep settings. The U-Boot web recovery above also accepts the stock image.
Flash layout
The default filesystems are as follows:
root@OpenWrt:~# df -h Filesystem Size Used Available Use% Mounted on /dev/root 8.3M 8.3M 0 100% /rom tmpfs 200.3M 248.0K 200.1M 0% /tmp /dev/ubi0_2 88.0M 76.0K 83.4M 0% /overlay overlayfs:/overlay 88.0M 76.0K 83.4M 0% / tmpfs 512.0K 0 512.0K 0% /dev
Serial
→ port.serial general information about the serial port, serial port cable, etc.
Serial settings: 115200 baud, 8N1, 3.3 V TTL. The 4-pin header is unpopulated and labelled GND / RX / TX / 3V3 on the mainboard. It sits under the Quectel module in the top right corner (see the board photos under Hardware Highlights and the close-up below). Connect GND, RX and TX only; do not connect the 3V3 pin.
Notes
- LTE: requires
modemmanager, see the note under Installation. - Dual SIM: both SIM slots are handled inside the modem, so there is only one cellular interface (
wwan0). - MAC addresses: WAN uses the label MAC, LAN +1, 2.4 GHz WiFi +2, 5 GHz WiFi +3.
