The D-Link DIR-885L router was initially introduced in December 2015, and although discontinued in January 2019, could still be purchased new or refurbished via various regional Amazon sites well into 2021. This dual-band router contains a 1.4GHz dual core processor, 128MB of flash memory, and 256MB of RAM, which makes it an acceptable OpenWrt candidate. Its wireless hardware is capable of obtaining transfer rates of 1000Mbps in the 2.4GHz band and 2167Mbps in the 5GHz band. It has a 1Gbps WAN port, four 1Gbps LAN ports, and a single USB 3.0 port.

D-Link marketed this router as supporting DD-WRT. It contains an embedded recovery mode in its bootloader, which allows easy switching between factory, DD-WRT and OpenWrt firmware. Although the last supported factory firmware update (v1.20b02) was released in October 2017, D-Link released a beta update (v1.21b03) in August 2018 to address the WPA2 KRACK vulnerability, and a subsequent beta update (also v1.21b03) in February 2020 to address a USB Shareport security issue.

Hardware version A1 of this router is supported by providing a pre-built firmware image containing the WLAN driver for the Broadcom BCM4366B chip. However, by manually installing the WLAN driver for the Broadcom BCM4366C chip, the OpenWrt firmware will also work with the A2 hardware version of the router.

The generic methods for installing OpenWrt on a device are discussed here. However, the easiest way to install OpenWrt on the D-Link DIR-855L is by using its embedded recovery mode. This method can also be used to restore its OEM firmware.

Installing OpenWrt Firmware

The method for installing OpenWrt firmware using the OEM WebUI is discussed here. This method only worked with earlier versions of the OEM firmware. If your router firmware has been upgraded beyond v1.13b03, this method will not work. However, the D-Link DIR-885L bootloader contains a recovery mode, which can be used to install OpenWrt firmware.

  1. Download OpenWrt firmware to computer. All stable versions of OpenWrt (BCM53xx/generic) can be found here.
  2. Place router in recovery mode.
  3. Upload OpenWrt firmware to router.
  4. Configure computer to use DHCP and browse to 192.168.1.1.
  5. In LuCI, reset to defaults.
  6. In LuCI, upload same firmware again (untick the keep settings option).
  7. In LuCI, reset to defaults and reboot.
  8. Configure OpenWrt as required.

Restoring OEM Firmware

Recovery mode can also be used to restore the OEM firmware. As discussed here, in 2018 D-Link started adding a layer of encryption to their stock firmware files. This now requires the OEM firmware file to be decrypted before it can be installed using recovery mode, or a transitional version of the OEM firmware must be installed first. Unfortunately, the D-Link DIR-885L firmware files can not be decrypted using the dlink-decrypt method. However, they have been successfully decrypted using the method presented here. As this latter decryption method requires the use of transitional OEM firmware, the following uses the latter restoration process (i.e., simply installs the transitional OEM firmware first).

  1. Download OEM firmware (v1.13b03 and v1.21b03_beta01_k24b) from here, or (v1.15b02 and v1.20b02) from here.
  2. Place router in recovery mode.
  3. Upload transitional OEM firmware (v1.13b03 or v1.15b02).
  4. Configure computer to use DHCP and browse to 192.168.1.1.
  5. In OEM WebUI, reset to defaults.
  6. In OEM WebUI, upload latest encrypted OEM firmware (v1.20b02 or v1.21b03).
  7. In OEM WebUI, reset to defaults and reboot.
  8. Restore saved configuration.

If you don't have a GUI (LuCI) available, you can alternatively upgrade via the command line. There are two command line methods for upgrading:

Note: It is important that you put the firmware image into the ramdisk (/tmp) before you start flashing.

  • Login as root via SSH on 192.168.1.1, then enter the following commands:

Installing OpenWrt firmware on the D-Link DIR-885L does not overwrite its bootloader partition, which contains the embedded recovery mode firmware. Unless the bootloader partition has been corrupted by some other means, the D-Link DIR-885L can be debricked by using recovery mode to re-install the OpenWrt or OEM firmware.

Extensive configuration information can be found in the OpenWrt documentation, which contains generic user guides regarding its basic configuration, as well as other quick start guides.

By default, installation of the pre-built OpenWrt firmware image for the D-Link DIR-885L includes only minimal configuration of the DHCP server and leaves the router's Wi-Fi radios disabled. As a result, additional configuration is required for the D-Link DIR-885L to be used as even the most basic wired or wireless router. Although OpenWrt can be configured exclusively via its CLI over SSH, the D-Link DIR-885L can also be configured via the standard OpenWrt WebUI (LuCI), which is included in its pre-built firmware image. To facilitate first-time OpenWrt users, the configuration instructions presented below use LuCI, when possible. Instructions using the CLI are only presented when doing so greatly simplifies the process.

The following assumes that the user is familiar with their network layout and has a basic understanding of the settings required to properly configure a network router. Throughout the process remember to click Save and Save & Apply, when required.

  1. Password — go to System → Administration and set Router Password.
  2. Timezone — go to System → System and in System Properties → General Settings select correct Timezone.
  3. LAN Configuration — go to Network → Interfaces and click Edit for lan Interface:
    1. In General Settings, change IPv4 address (optional).
    2. In Advanced Settings, add DNS server addresses to Use custom DNS servers.
    3. In DHCP Server → Advanced Settings, add DNS server addresses to DHCP-Options (optional, see example).
  4. WAN Configuration — go to Network → Interfaces and click Edit for wan Interface:
    1. In General Settings, select required Protocol and add related settings (e.g., IPv4 address, IPv4 gateway).
    2. In System → Reboot, click Perform reboot.
  5. Wireless Configuration — go to Network → Wireless and click Edit for radio0 (i.e., 2.4 GHz band).
    1. In Device Configuration → Advanced Settings, select correct Country Code.
    2. In Interface Configuration → General Setup, change ESSID (optional).
    3. In Interface Configuration → Wireless Security, select desired Encryption and Cipher, and enter a Key (i.e., password).
    4. Finally, in Device Configuration → General Setup, click Enable.
    5. Repeat for radio1 (i.e., 5.0 GHz band).
  6. LED Configuration — go to System → LED Configuration and click Add LED action.
    1. Enter a Name, and select desired LED Name, Trigger, Device and Trigger Mode.
    2. Repeat for other LEDs.

The pre-built OpenWrt firmware image for the D-Link DIR-885L includes the radio firmware (blob) for the Broadcom BCM4366B chip. Early OpenWrt releases (17.01.1 through 18.06.9) included an older version of this Broadcom radio firmware (Version: 10.10.69.237, Date: 2016-01-08, File Size: 989,401). However, since OpenWrt release 19.07.0, a newer version of the Broadcom radio firmware has been included (Version: 10.28.2, Date: 2018-11-05, File Size: 1,105,361). As discussed here and here, there appear to be issues with this newer version of the Broadcom radio firmware, which prevent wireless devices from connecting, or staying connected, to the D-Link DIR-885L, when using the 5.0 GHz band. This can be resolved by downloading and manually installing an older version of the Broadcom radio firmware. The current best candidate can be found here (Version: 10.10.122.45, Date: 2017-05-31, File Size: 1,146,907, MD5 Hash: 92d1baab27d88b3ff1c9b9a39c33b0b4).

To replace the current version of the Broadcom radio firmware:

  1. Download file (brcmfmac4366b-pcie.bin) to computer.
  2. Check file size and hash, to ensure it wasn’t corrupted during download.
  3. Transfer file to /lib/firmware/brcm directory on router (e.g., using SCP).
  4. Reboot router.

The pre-built OpenWrt firmware image only supports hardware version A1 of the D-Link DIR-885L. However, the OpenWrt firmware can be used with hardware version A2 by manually installing the radio firmware (blob) for the Broadcom BCM4366C chip.

To install OpenWrt firmware on the A2 hardware version of the D-Link DIR-885L:

  1. Install pre-built OpenWrt firmware image for D-Link DIR-885L.
  2. Configure OpenWrt LAN and WAN Interfaces so that Internet access is available (see above).
  3. Go to System → Software and click Update lists....
    1. Once package list has updated, enter 4366 in Filter field.
    2. For brcmfmac-firmware-4366c0-pcie, click Install....
    3. Reboot router.
  4. Configure OpenWrt Wireless radios (see above).

General information regarding the use and configuration of hardware buttons is presented here. The D-Link DIR-885L has two buttons and a slide switch that are inputs to the CPU. The latching power button appears to be hardwired into the power circuit on the PCB. The pre-built OpenWrt firmware image for the D-Link DIR-885L appears to be configured so that the RESET button initiates a factory reset (i.e., restores the OpenWrt firmware to its default configuration). The WPS button and ROUTER / EXTENDER slide switch are not pre-configured.

The case consists of an upper red half and a lower dark grey half. To open the case, first remove the four phillips screws hidden under the rubber feet. In addition to the screws, the two halves of the case are held together by nine integral catches: two at the front, two along each angled edge, and three along the back. Due to their flimsy construction, it's highly unlikely that the case can be opened without breaking the upper half portion of all three back catches.

Serial Port

General information regarding Serial ports and cables is provided here. Located on the top side of the D-Link DIR-885L PCB is an unpopulated 4-pin header labelled JP1. This header is accessible without removing the top heatsink. When probed with a multi-meter, the results do not match the provided general information. However, this header still appears to be a serial port, with the following arrangement: Pin 1 (square) - Rx, Pin 2 - Vcc (3v3), Pin 3 - Gnd, and Pin 4 - Tx. In order to use it reliably, pins should be soldered to the header. Caution: This port operates at TTL voltage levels (3v3). Applying voltages greater than 3v3 will permanently damage the router.

J1 Header

General information regarding JTAB ports and cables is provided here. Located on the top side of the D-Link DIR-885L PCB is what appears be to a 10-pin header labelled J1. This header is only accessible once the top heatsink has been removed. When probed with a multi-meter, all odd numbered pins appear to be connected to ground, and all even numbered pins give a reading of 3.26 Vdc. Given these results, it's most likely that this is a power connection, used for testing during the manufacturing process. As there are no other headers on the PCB (suitable or otherwise), it appears that the D-Link DIR-885L does not have a JTAB port.
