Devices with Broadcom WiFi chipsets have limited OpenWrt supportability (due to limited FLOSS driver availability for Broadcom chips). Consider this when choosing a device to buy, or when deciding to flash OpenWrt on your device because it is listed as supported. See Broadcom WiFi for details.

DSL will not work at all on devices with BCM63xx DSL chipset (due to unavailability of FLOSS driver for Broadcom chips). Consider this when choosing a device to buy, or when deciding to flash OpenWrt on your device because it is listed as supported.
See Broadcom DSL, Unsupported: DSL modem and Broadcom BCM63xx for details.

You must set your TCP/IP v4 protocol to:

  1. IP: 192.168.1.2
  2. Netmask: 255.255.255.0
  3. Gateway: 192.168.1.1
  4. DNS: (optional, can be blank).

Then:

  1. Power off the router.
  2. Press reset button near the antenna.
  3. Keep it pressed while powering up during ~20+ seconds.
  4. Acces to http://192.168.1.1 and upload binary file.
  5. Wait until router reboots.

NOTE: if you experience wifi problems (random disconnection or connected but no data) try disabling “WMM Mode” in wifi settings.

BCM43225 802.11b/g/n onboard wifi, 2x external non-detachable antennas outside the case.

No physical EEPROM at the board, nor partition reserverd for this data at the flash chip. In theory, in the original firmware, the EEPROM is taken from the file /etc/wlan/bcm43225_map.bin, although some bytes differ comparing it wlctl dumps.

port.serial general information about the serial port, serial port cable, etc.

How to connect to the Serial Port of this specific device:

o o o o
GND TX RX Vcc

Only connect GND, TX and RX

Read: System configuration: Leds to configure the leds

Label Colour Active GPIO Pin
Internet red High 1
green High 7
Power red High 4
green High 8
DSL green Low 11
LAN1 green Low 25 (PINMUX_EPHY0_ACT_LED)
LAN2 green Low 26 (PINMUX_EPHY1_ACT_LED)
LAN3 green Low 27 (PINMUX_EPHY2_ACT_LED)
LAN4 green Low 28 (PINMUX_EPHY3_ACT_LED)

LAN1 to LAN4 leds are multiplexed, this means they are hardware controlled LEDs. We can still control these leds via userspace if we undo the pinmux by writting some particular memory registers. We can access these registers with devmem at memory address 0x1000009C

root@OpenWrt:/# devmem 0x1000009C 64
0x0154000000000000

Every enabled bit of this register enables/disables a LAN led.

The bit 56 enables the LAN4 hardware controlled LED, bit 54 enables LAN3, and so on.

memory address = 0x1000009C, length = 64 bits
bit description GPIO Pin Label
50 PINMUX_EPHY0_ACT_LED 25 LAN1
52 PINMUX_EPHY1_ACT_LED 26 LAN2
54 PINMUX_EPHY2_ACT_LED 27 LAN3
56 PINMUX_EPHY3_ACT_LED 28 LAN4

If we want to disable the hardware LED control on LAN1, then we should set the bit 50 to 0, in other words we must write the value 0x150000000000000 to the memory location 0x1000009C

root@OpenWrt:/# devmem 0x1000009C 64 0x150000000000000

Or for example for disabling hardware control on all LAN leds

root@OpenWrt:/# devmem 0x1000009C 64 0x000000000000000

This way we can control these GPIOs via /sys/class/gpio/ interface, with scripts or any utility for this purpose. It also allows to use these GPIOs with some some drivers with GPIO stuff involved.

→ as a beginner, you really should inform yourself about soldering in general and then obtain some practical experience!

  1. Desolder R229, R228, R226, R227, R225 and R13
  2. Scracth the VIAs PCIE_RST and PCIE_CLKREQ to expose them for soldering
  3. Solder a thin wire from the board spot pins (see the arrows markings on the board photo) to the miniPCI_e card pins

In this particular mod a power regulator is used to feed the minipci-e board, to convert the main 12V on the router to 3.3V.

ar5387un-mod-pcie.jpg

We could also take 3.3V directly from the board. We must ensure the router provides enough current to feed our miniPCI_e card.

To save some power we can unsolder the L1 choke near (above) the SPI flash memory chip, for having more current for our miniPCI_e card

TODO: disconnect the power from the BCM43225 wifi chip. The only known way right now to do this, is to desolder the BCM43225 chip. We don't need to do it unleess we wanted to save some milliwats with the purpose for feeding directly our new miniPCI-e card.

Thanks to antares for making this mod
