Buffalo WHR-HP-G54

This device is NOT RECOMMENDED for future use with OpenWrt due to low flash/ram.
DO NOT BUY DEVICES WITH 4MB FLASH / 32MB RAM if you intend to flash an up-to-date and secure OpenWrt version onto it! See 4/32 warning for details.

1) This device does not have sufficient resources (flash and/or RAM) to provide secure and reliable operation.
This means that even setting a password or changing simple network settings might not be possible any more, rendering the device effectively useless. See OpenWrt on 4/32 devices what you can do now.

2) OpenWrt support for this device has ended in 2022.
19.07.10 was the last official build for 4/32 devices.

802.11g wireless router with a 5 port programmable ethernet switch which supports VLANs. Very similar to the WHR-G54S but the WHR-HP-G54 is equiped with an internal wifi amplifier.

Version/Model OpenWrt Notes
WHR-HP-G54 ≥ 7.09 OpenWrt versions ≥12.09 run easily out of memory

You can't use the vendor firmware web interface to install Openwrt since it only accepts vendor encrypted firmwares. You must use the TFTP method instead. If you want to upgrade from DD-WRT, you can use the web-interface to flash the trx file.

Specific values you need

Bootloader default tftp server IPv4 address 192.168.11.1
Firmware tftp image openwrt-brcm-2.4-squashfs.trx or openwrt-brcm47xx-squashfs.trx
TFTP Transfer Window 4 seconds
TFTP Window Start approximately 3 seconds after power on
TFTP Client Required IP Address any compatible with 192.168.11.1
  • Unplug the router's power cord.
  • Confirm your PC is configured to use a fixed IP in the 192.168.11.0/24 range (do not use .1).
  • Connect the router's LAN1 port directly to your PC.
  • The router accepts an image via TFTP, after powering on during a short time interval, be fast.

Execute the TFTP commands below:

  • Linux (or Mac OS X)
    tftp 192.168.11.1
    tftp> binary
    tftp> trace
    tftp> put openwrt-brcm-2.4-squashfs.trx
  • Windows
    tftp -i 192.168.11.1 PUT openwrt-brcm-2.4-squashfs.trx

After the TFTP upload is complete, wait at least six minutes. The firmware is first loaded into the RAM, and then flashed. This process takes a little time, and to ensure that the router is not bricked you should wait six minutes.

The router will reboot itself automatically after the upgrade is complete. Rebooting may take a while. It might be the case that the router does not reboot by itself; if this happens it should be safe to wait for the period mentioned and then to do a manual reboot (pull the power-cord).

You are done! You should be able to telnet to your router (IP address: 192.168.1.1 - even if you were using another one previously) and start configuring.

generic.sysupgrade

If you have already installed OpenWrt and like to reflash for e.g. upgrading to a new OpenWrt version you can upgrade using the mtd command line tool. It is important that you put the firmware image into the ramdisk (/tmp) before you start flashing.

LuCI Web Upgrade Process

Terminal Upgrade Process

  • Login as root via SSH on 192.168.1.1
  • Use the following commands to upgrade.
cd /tmp/
wget http://downloads.openwrt.org/snapshots/trunk/brcm47xx/openwrt-brcm47xx-squashfs.trx
sysupgrade /tmp/openwrt-brcm47xx-squashfs.trx
  • If sysupgrade does not support this router, use the following commands.
cd /tmp/
wget http://downloads.openwrt.org/snapshots/trunk/brcm47xx/openwrt-brcm47xx-squashfs.trx
mtd write /tmp/openwrt-brcm47xx-squashfs.trx linux && reboot

Basic configuration After flashing, proceed with this.
Set up your Internet connection, configure wireless, configure USB port, etc.

The default network configuration is:

Interface Name Description Default configuration
br-lan LAN & WiFi 192.168.1.1/24
vlan0 (eth0.0) LAN ports (1 to 4) None
vlan1 (eth0.1) WAN port DHCP
wlan0 WiFi Disabled

Numbers 0-3 are Ports 1-4 as labeled on the unit, number 4 is the Internet (WAN) on the unit, 5 is the internal connection to the router itself. Don't be fooled: Port 1 on the unit is number 3 when configuring VLANs. vlan0 = eth0.0, vlan1 = eth0.1 and so on.

Port Switch port
Internet (WAN) 4
LAN 1 3
LAN 2 2
LAN 3 1
LAN 4 0

Get into the shell and:type

nvram get boardflags

The result probably will be 0x1758 - enhanced receive sensitivity. The other settings are:

0x0758 - no amp and receive sensitivity normal

0x2758 - amp on, normal receive

0x3758 - both amp and BroadRange enhanced receive sensitivity on

i'm using 0x3758 and it's much better than the stock setting, to do it just

 nvram set boardflags=0x3758

 reboot

port.serial general information about the serial port, serial port cable, etc.

How to connect to the Serial Port of this specific device:

The serial port is located at the J1 pinheader.

You must use 3V3 TTL serial adapter:

115200 baud rate
8 data bits
1 stop bit
no parity
no handshake

port.jtag general information about the JTAG port, JTAG cable, etc.

The WHR-HP-G54 version (no trailing -1 or -4) version of this router is confirmed to have JTAG support. JTAG support on the other versions is unconfirmed. The WHR-HP-G54 board has thru-hole pads labeled CN1 for JTAG near the J1 serial header. The solder can be removed and a 12-pin header can be added for use with JTAG. The holes for the even pins are slightly smaller than the odd holes and it may be difficult to extract all the old solder enough to insert the header.

Old versions of the WRT54G EJTAG DeBrick Utility will not talk to this board; version 3.0 or newer will work. The

/noreset

option is required for all operations as of version 3.0 of the Utility.

  1. you could read about bootloader in general
  1. as a beginner, you really should inform yourself about soldering in general and then obtain some practical experience!

It can be done. The board has pads for 4 chips, 2 at the top (unsoldered) and 2 at the bottom (RAM chips soldered), probably you can solder 4 RAM chips but might be with half bus width (8bit). There is no info on how to proceed with this mod, be the first one to add this info here.
