Installation

Since commit 0b62fe5e OpenWrt can be installed using the EVA/Adam2 bootloader. Within the same HW revision 5 of the FRITZ!Box 3370 different NAND flash chips are used and the correct image has to be chosen.

Please read the detailed commit message before try install.

Box does not get bricked if false firmware is flashed → reboot loop → flash other NAND firmware version.

Flash Layout

First let's have a quick view at the Flash Layout with the stock firmware and after OpenWrt has been installed. When you later want to understand, what mtd/sysupgrade do, have a second look here:

Installation LAN and serial (optional)

hints: EVA FTP install/recovery

connect host LAN cable to FritzBox LAN port and establish serial connection (optional) - see serial for further details

  1. set your host IP to 192.168.178.x (subnet 255.255.255.0)
  2. open a Terminal in the directory where the files to flash are
  3. power on FRITZ!Box
  4. establish an FTP connection within 5seconds to 192.168.178.1
    ftp -n 192.168.178.1

    or serial (optional): interrupt boot pressing a key, when Eva_AVM > appears in a Serial Port Terminal (e.g. GtkTerm) opened as root user

  5. issue the following FTP commands - :!: some boxes seem to reboot after 30s - see commit, so be quick → copy/paste f.e. with a Clipboard Manager → firmware flashing is done within a few seconds

If something goes wrong → do not panic → try again - bootloader is not touched.

Upgrading OpenWrt

LuCI Web Upgrade Process

  • Browse to http://192.168.1.1/cgi-bin/luci/mini/system/upgrade/ LuCI Upgrade URL
  • Upload image file for sysupgrade to LuCI
  • Wait for reboot

Terminal Upgrade Process

If you don't have a GUI (LuCI) available, you can alternatively upgrade via the command line. There are two command line methods for upgrading:

  • sysupgrade
  • mtd

Note: It is important that you put the firmware image into the ramdisk (/tmp) before you start flashing.

sysupgrade

  • Login as root via SSH on 192.168.1.1, then enter the following commands:
cd /tmp
wget http://downloads.openwrt.org/snapshots/trunk/XXX/xxx.abc
sysupgrade /tmp/xxx.abc

mtd

If sysupgrade does not support this router, use mtd.

  • Login as root via SSH on 192.168.1.1, then enter the following commands:

mtd write /tmp/xxx.abc firmware && reboot

  • Remove the 2 rubber stands close to the wallmount holes, they hide 2 of the screws
  • Open the 4 Torx 8 screws
  • Lift the casing top carefully, front hook easily breaks
