FRITZ!Box WLAN 3370

Since commit 0b62fe5e OpenWrt can be installed using the EVA/Adam2 bootloader. Within the same HW revision 5 of the FRITZ!Box 3370 different NAND flash chips are used and the correct image has to be chosen.

Please read the detailed commit message before try install.

First let's have a quick view at the Flash Layout with the stock firmware and after OpenWrt has been installed. When you later want to understand, what mtd/sysupgrade do, have a second look here:

The standard FTP client in Windows doesn't have the required features for flashing.

Using lftp to install 22.03.3 is approved to work (date: 02/23)

Replace XXX either with hynix or micron, depending on your cpu model. Box does not get bricked if wrong firmware is flashed → reboot loop → just repeat procedure below with other NAND firmware version.

Steps:

  • Install lftp (in Debian-based distros: sudo apt install lftp)
  • Download and rename openwrt-22.03.3-lantiq-xrx200-avm_fritz3370-rev2-XXX-squashfs-eva-kernel.bin to mtd1
  • Download and rename openwrt-22.03.3-lantiq-xrx200-avm_fritz3370-rev2-XXX-squashfs-eva-filesystem.bin to mtd0
  • Create a separate file in the same directory named adam2-cmd and paste the following commands:
open 192.168.178.1
login adam2 adam2
quote USER adam2
quote PASS adam2
binary
debug
quote SETENV linux_fs_start 0
quote MEDIA FLSH
put mtd1
put mtd0
quote REBOOT

  • Change your local IP to 192.168.178.10 (subnet 255.255.255.0)
  • Open a terminal in the directory where the files to flash are
  • Connect host LAN cable to FRITZ!Box LAN port
  • Power on FRITZ!Box and immediately run
    lftp -f adam2-cmd

    and wait approximately 1 second

  • If nothing happens in terminal press CTRL-C to cancel the running lftp command and re-run the command quickly (you can press ARROW-UP in terminal to execute the previous command)
  • If above procedure does not work within five seconds after powering on the box, power off the box and start again by powering on the FRITZ!Box
  • Firmware flashing is done within a few seconds and no errors are printed in terminal

If something goes wrong (errors or boot loop) → as stated above, do not panic → try again with different firmware.

  • Browse to http://192.168.1.1/cgi-bin/luci/mini/system/upgrade/ LuCI Upgrade URL
  • Upload image file for sysupgrade to LuCI
  • Wait for reboot

If you don't have a GUI (LuCI) available, you can alternatively upgrade via the command line. There are two command line methods for upgrading:

  • sysupgrade
  • mtd

Note: It is important that you put the firmware image into the ramdisk (/tmp) before you start flashing.

sysupgrade

  • Login as root via SSH on 192.168.1.1, then enter the following commands:
cd /tmp
wget http://downloads.openwrt.org/snapshots/trunk/XXX/xxx.abc
sysupgrade /tmp/xxx.abc

mtd

If sysupgrade does not support this router, use mtd.

  • Login as root via SSH on 192.168.1.1, then enter the following commands:
cd /tmp
wget http://downloads.openwrt.org/snapshots/trunk/XXX/xxx.abc
mtd write /tmp/xxx.abc firmware && reboot

After flashing, proceed with Basic configuration.
Set up your Internet connection, configure wireless, configure USB port, etc.
