AVM FRITZ!Box 7362 SL

The AVM FRITZ!Box 7362 SL is a vectoring capable DSL router with two Gigabit and two Fast Ethernet ports, 802.11n wireless and telephony support (the latter not supported by OpenWrt).

Flashing instructions

FRITZ!Box typically uses 192.168.178.1 as the default IP in the bootloader. If the device doesn't respond, try with 192.168.1.1.

  1. Assign a static IP in the 192.168.178.x range (e.g. 192.168.178.100) to your PC (192.168.1.x if the device uses 192.168.1.1 as its default IP).
  2. Ideally, place a switch in between the router and your client (this slightly widens your FTP flashing window).
  3. Power on your device and use scripts/flashing/eva_ramboot.py to send initramfs-kernel.bin to the router within a few seconds after powering on. You need to use Python 3. The router will then boot into OpenWrt: python3 /path/to/eva_ramboot.py 192.168.178.1 /path/to/openwrt-lantiq-xrx200-avm_fritz7362sl-initramfs-kernel.bin
  4. Blinking red power LED indicates that OpenWrt is running in recovery mode. That means that you can proceed to the next step. (see [1] below)
  5. OpenWrt's default IP is 192.168.1.1. On your PC, set an IP address in 192.168.1.x range (e.g. 192.168.1.100) or enable DHCP.
  6. Transfer the sysupgrade image to the /tmp directory of the router using scp
  7. ssh to 192.168.1.1 with username root and no password
  8. Run sysupgrade /tmp/openwrt-19.07.5-lantiq-xrx200-avm_fritz7362sl-squashfs-sysupgrade.bin

First boot might take a bit longer if linux_fs_start was set to 1. In that case the device will reboot twice, first time it will fail to load second kernel (overwritten by ubifs), set linux_fs_start to 0 and reboot.

[1] There are reported cases where OpenWrt booted but the power LED was behaving like the stock firmware would have booted (blinking green, then just flashing green). It that is the case for you, just change the IP of your PC to 192.168.1.x (or user DHCP) and check if you can get SSH access to 192.168.1.1.

Returning to the FRITZ!OS

The simplest way to go back to the FRITZ!OS is to download the official recovery image and follow the instructions in the application. Recovery application can be run on both Windows and Linux (with Wine).

The Fritzbox generates some acoustical noise from internal switching power supply circuits, especially remarkable at boot time. Using the original AVM Fritzbox firmware the noise disappears after 30 seconds, however if you use Openwrt firmware, the noise stays. This might annoy people who want install that device in some quite place like the sleeping room. One solution is to add a 1kΩ...3.3kΩ resistor on the pcb to the analouge telefony part (under the shown electrolytic capacitor, see picture below), giving the circuit some load, and then the noise is gone. The resistor slightly increases the power consumption (up to 0.9W depending on the resistor) of the router.

Assumption: As the Openwrt firmware of the 7362SL doen´t support the telefony part (yet), maybe the telefony circuit isn´t set to a specific state as the AVM firmware does it. Adding the resistor is a hardware-workaround.
