AUKEY WF-R8

The AUKEY WF-R8 is an AC1200 WiFi range extender based on the MediaTek MT7628AN with two Fast Ethernet ports, a 802.11n 2T/2R 2.4 GHz 300Mbps and a 802.11ac 2T/2R 5 GHz 867 Mbps wireless interfaces.

The WF-R8 ships with a Linux 2.6 kernel. It features a web interface through lighttpd and a telnet open on port 2323 or 23.

The web interface is very simple, although it does not offer much options.

Configuration files can also be modified using telnet, but the modifications will be erased upon reboot. Permanent changes must be done by modifying values stored in NVRAM, using the tool ralink_init.

Install OpenWrt (generic explanation)

The generic MT7628 Evaluation Board image can be used but the device may not have all the features available (e.g. the 5 GHz radio).

The stock firmware web interface does not seem to accept the OpenWrt images.

OpenWrt images can be flashed from within the U-boot bootloader via TFTP.

Some devices may have a restricted boot loader that pretends to try TFTP recovery but does not request anything.

In these cases, you may want to flash a working boot loader for that device. A good summary on this topic can be found here. The unlocked bootloader can be found here.

  1. Set your computer to 192.168.10.100
  2. Set up a TFTP server on your computer
  3. Rename the OpenWrt xxxx-sysupgrade.bin image as firmware.bin and place it in the root folder of the TFTP server
  4. Power off the device and connect an Ethernet cable from its LAN port to your computer
  5. Press the WPS button (and keep it pressed)
  6. Power on the device
  7. After a few seconds, when the LAN LED stops blinking very fast, release the WPS button
  8. After one minute or so, OpenWrt will be running and accessible as with any other device, normally at 192.168.1.1. If nothing happens, retry with the WAN/LAN port.

The device does not have exposed serial port pins. There are very tiny TX/RX pins labeled T/R by the bios chip and requires fine soldering

The WF-R8 has seven leds. Three of them show the signal strength of the repeated wlan and come preconfigured in the system. However, they don't light up in the default installation. In order to make them work, the package rssileds must be installed.
