ASUS RT-N56U A1

ASUSRT-N56U A1 Router

Note: There appears to be a problem with 5 GHz spontaneously turning off after a day or so if channel set to “auto”. Reported workaround is to manually set the channel. See the following links for more information about this issue.

It is recommended to use the ASUS Firmware Restoration tool for installing OpenWrt.

Don't flash snapshot image for initial flashing as nothing is ON in snapshot image. This means unless you have a serial connected you will not be able to access the router. You can, however, easily update from a stable release to a daily snapshot, but make sure “Keep Settings” checkbox is checked.

Check your model before installation! RT-N56U B1 is an almost identical looking router that was also sold as the RT-N56U, but contains different hardware. See the table below for and the RT-N56U B1 device page for more information.

Model /Version Launch Date UPC EAN Model Specific Notes
A1 / v1 2011 610839332465 4719543332467 WAN & LAN 1-4 RJ45 sockets have LED's
B1 / v2 2015 610839332472 4719543332474 RJ45 sockets lack LED's; Small light grey dip switch near the power plug

OpenWrt 15.05 and later can only be installed via TFTP or ASUS Firmware Restoration tool. Attempting to install OpenWrt via the stock WebUI may brick your device. Earlier versions could be installed via the stock web interface, see this bug report for details.

  1. Enter Recovery Mode
    1. Unplug Router
    2. Hold Reset Button and Plug in Router
    3. Release button when front LED flashes slowly
  2. Assign your PC 192.168.1.11/24 on ethernet (a different IP even from the same subnet does not work)
  3. tftp 192.168.1.1
  4. tftp> trace (optional, more verbose output)
  5. tftp> bin
  6. tftp> put openwrt-ramips-rt3883-rt-n56u-squashfs-sysupgrade.bin
  7. Wait for the power light to stop flashing and then telnet to 192.168.1.1 or visit 192.168.1.1 with your browser to access the LUCI interface

For Windows users, this is the recommended method for installing OpenWrt

  1. Download and install the ASUS Firmware Restoration tool from the ASUS Support page
  2. Download the sysupgrade image from OpenWrt
  3. Enter Recovery Mode
    1. Unplug Router
    2. Hold Reset Button and Plug in Router
    3. Release button when front LED flashes slowly
  4. Use the following to set up your TCP/IP settings:
    1. IP address: 192.168.1.10
    2. Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
  5. Disconnect or disable ALL other network interfaces BEFORE opening the “Firmware Restoration” Tool! Other network interfaces may interfere with the tool.
  6. Open the Firmware Restoration tool
  7. Select the sysupgrade.bin and upload
  8. After it uploads the file, it will tell you to power the router off and back on
  9. Wait for the power light to stop flashing
  10. Telnet, SSH or use your browser to access the router on 192.168.1.1
  11. If you had to disconnect or disable other network interfaces, you can now reconnect or enable them

The Asus Firmware Restoration tool can be used to restore the original stock firmware on Windows.

  1. Download and install the ASUS Firmware Restoration tool from the ASUS Support page
  2. Download the stock firmware from the ASUS Support page
  3. Enter Recovery Mode
    1. Unplug Router
    2. Hold Reset Button and Plug in Router
    3. Release button when front LED flashes slowly
  4. Use the following to set up your TCP/IP settings:
    1. IP address: 192.168.1.10
    2. Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
  5. Disconnect or disable ALL other network interfaces BEFORE opening the Firmware Restoration tool! Other network interfaces may interfere with the tool.
  6. Open the Firmware Restoration tool
  7. Select firmware *.trx and upload

Remove the two screws below the label first, a Phillips-tip 1.0 screwdriver works great here, then use a plectrum or a similar object to open the case. The edge above the ports is glued with soft glue and needs some force.

The ports are numbered starting from the USB socket side, Ports 0,1,2 and 3 are LAN and port 4 is the WAN port.
