Installation instructions:
--------------------------
1. Upload openwrt-qualcommax-ipq807x-asus_rt-ax89x-initramfs-factory.trx
via the stock firmware.
Administration -> Firmware Upgrade -> Manual Firmware update (Upload)

After flashing, the device will reboot with OpenWrt initramfs, and it can
be accessed via any of the LAN ports, using SSH with the usual OpenWrt
default credentials.
Note: If you reboot the device at this point, it'll revert back to the Asus firmware.

2. Run sysupgrade from within the OpenWrt initramfs:
* Copy (using scp, or wget) openwrt-qualcommax-ipq807x-asus_rt-ax89x-squashfs-sysupgrade.bin 
to the /tmp/ folder of the running initramfs image.
* Install OpenWrt by executing sysupgrade -n /tmp/openwrt-qualcommax-ipq807x-asus_rt-ax89x-squashfs-sysupgrade.bin

Standard Uboot ; has serial and tftp boot prompt.

generic.debrick Update: Successful debrick can be accomplished with the default uboot ; meaning easy recovery is possible !

Method:

  1. Setup interface on Host PC with ip 192.168.50.75/24 (not the Router will ONLY accept tftp put over this IP) ; $ip a a 192.168.50.75/24 dev <NICDEV>
  2. The HostNIC and recovery is performed ONLY over the 1G WAN port NIC (this is the 'blue') NIC port next to the 10G Copper port.
  3. Find valid recovery .trx
  4. Run tftp to 192.168.50.1 ; $tftp 192.168.50.1
  5. Unplug DC barrel jack whilst holding down the reset switch with a pointy thing
  6. Leave Power Button Depressed(on)
  7. Replug DC barrel jack whilst still holding reset switch with a pointy thing ; release after first LED indication
  8. Power LED will flash slowly
  9. Use TFTP client to put target firmware in bin mode; set trace to show progess; $tftp>trace ; $tftp>bin; $tftp>put <validfile>.trx
  10. Trace will show transfer ; wait for router to reboot.

Note - this WILL NOT clear the NVRAM ; meaning you will need to connect with the user-pass/network setup previously. A reset can be performed with the stock firmware, with a 30/30/30 reset method from powered up state.

Note: This will possibly void your warranty in some jurisdictions. Here in NZ 'Void if removed' stickers are a 100% illegal and in breach of our Consumer laws. IANAL.

  • Remove two of the Bottom case pads which hide two Screws
  • Remove the lower portion of the Serial/Info Sticky on the bottom revealing the third through screw
  • Work an edge around the lip of the top cover circling the top case caseful several times wiggling it up and down with the edge to release clips

There is a JTAG port with male headers soldered, there also appears to be a free and exposed set of I2C pins in addition to the JTAG meaning there are free GPIO's on the SoC. Router requires DC powering so leave the VCC pin unconnected.
