The ASUS RT-AC85P is an AC2400 wireless router with 4 LAN Gbit ports and 1 WAN Gbit port. Additionally, it has a single USB 3.1 Gen 1 port. The device has 3 external antennas, a fourth antenna is built into the device.

Installation

Installation via tftp

The overall procedure is to:

  1. Switch on device, within 2s press reset button and keep pressed until power LED starts blinking slowly.
  2. Upload factory image via tftp put, the router's ip is 192.168.1.1 and expects the client on 192.168.1.75.

The following shows what to do in detail using a Linux machine for the installation.

  1. First, install the atftp client with your package manager. Now connect the router via Ethernet to the Linux machine. Using a switch in between allows you to see better what is going on and will prevent timeouts on the router in case the Linux box does not establish the Ethernet connection in time.
  2. Now, using Linux as the TFTP client, you need to issue the following commands to configure the network (assuming eth0 is the ethernet port) and tftp client:
    sudo ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.75 netmask 255.255.255.0
    atftp --trace --option "timeout 1" --option "mode octet" --put --local-file openwrt-ramips-mt7621-asus_rt-ac85p-squashfs-factory.bin 192.168.1.1
  3. At this point you press the power button of the router and within 2s press reset button and keep pressed until power LED starts blinking slowly. On the linux side you should see that the image is uploaded.
  4. The router should flash the image and then boot the newly installed image.

If something does go wrong during flashing, don't worry: The router has an alternate boot partition. Whenever the router is booting up, it verifies both boot partitions and boots from the first one without checksum error. If this fails, too, you can fix the router via another tftp installation or via recovery using the serial console.

If this does not work for you immediately, follow the instructions on → Installing OpenWrt via TFTP to troubleshoot. The right section in the documentation is the “Bootloader contains TFTP server” method.

Installation via ssh

If you have already set up your router using the OEM firmware, then it is also possible to install OpenWRT via SSH access:

  1. Activate SSH under “Administration” → “System”.
  2. Transfer the OpenWrt factory image via scp using your workstation:
    scp openwrt-ramips-mt7621-asus_rt-ac85p-squashfs-factory.bin admin@192.168.50.1:/tmp
  3. Connect via SSH to the router:
    ssh admin@192.168.50.1
  4. Write the OpenWrt image to flash:
    > mtd-write -i /tmp/openwrt-ramips-mt7621-asus_rt-ac65p-squashfs-factory.bin -d linux
  5. Reboot the router
    > reboot

Installation via the serial console

If you have the equipment to solder a serial connection onto the router's board, you can use a third method to flash the firmware. Just press “2” during boot and upload the factory image using a TFTP server. This method (as the method with ssh above) has the advantage that you retain a copy of the original firmware in the alternative boot partition, which you can backup using OpenWRT once it is installed. The backup copy can then be easily used from OpenWRT to revert the router to the original OEM firmware. If you have used the installation method without serial console, you need to use the Asus firmware recovery software.

OEM easy installation

At present it is not known what the structure of the OEM firmware image is that the Web-Gui would accept. Therefore this installation method is not possible.

OEM installation using the TFTP method

Specific values needed for tftp

Upgrading OpenWrt

LuCI Web Upgrade Process

  • Browse to http://192.168.1.1/cgi-bin/luci/mini/system/upgrade/ LuCI Upgrade URL

If you don't have a GUI (LuCI) available, you can alternatively upgrade via the command line. Note: It is important that you put the firmware image into the ramdisk (/tmp) before you start flashing.

Serial

How to connect to the Serial Port of this specific device:
The UART is present as Pads marked J4 on the PCB, the sequence of the pads is: 3.3V - TX - RX - GND. 3.3V is the square pad. In particular the ground pad is difficult to solder because of a large ground plane acting as heat-sink. Either use a powerful (>=100W) solder iron with a large tip, or drill a 1-1.2mm hole into the lead-pad in order to through-connect a pin.
