OpenWrt Infrastructure Meeting September 2026

Date: September 23 2026

Present: Baptiste, Ansuel

Next meeting: 28th October

Baptiste upgraded the wiki to the latest version, and cleaned up old plugins.

It can break formatting a bit, forum post here: https://forum.openwrt.org/t/openwrt-dokuwiki-upgrade-report-issues/253373

efahl wants to enable markdown, should we do it? See the forum post.

Paul wants to host a control plane to rebuild and compare firmware from a predictable config. He is asking to have a dedicated VM for it that should cost 20€/month.

→ no problem

SFC also proposed to increase to 70€/month and add also additional worker for normal build server. This is not really a priority, we should maybe instead invest on the download server storage.

So far, most buildbot workers are provided by third-parties (Freifunk, OSUOSL, etc).

We have currently 23 workers for phase1 (images), and 15 workers for phase2 (packages, split into snapshots, 24.10, 25.12)

Do we need more workers?

Latest operations to make it more stable:

  • increase CPU priority and parallelism for git operations (clone/pull, used in particular by buildbots)
  • increase timeout between nginx and git

It's now quite reliable for buildbot workers.

The web interface has lower priority, so it's sometimes overloaded when the bots crawl it.

Ansible code to deploy monitoring on all servers is mostly finished: Wireguard is OK, node-exporter is OK, automated scrapping config still missing.

Baptiste will put it in production soon.

We only have space for one more minor release, cleanup is becoming urgent...

Proposal to move old releases to an archive (in addition to the current archive server managed by Zoltan).

For 50 € / month, we can have 6 TB of object storage at Hetzner.

Buildbot images are currently based on Debian 11.

Current version is 3.11.3 https://github.com/openwrt/buildbot/pkgs/container/buildbot%2Fbuildworker-v3.11.3

https://github.com/openwrt/buildbot/pull/80

We are also quite out-of-date for the buildbot version.

We will probably need to upgrade both buildbot and Python version at the same time to avoid compatibility issues.

This is independant from the underlying OS (currently Debian 11 for buildbot master, Debian 13 for buildbot workers)

Ansuel will ping Petr about it

28 October, 17:00 UTC (Ansuel will check the time with people in the US)

Ansuel will send a reminder one week before the meeting
