The TEW-829DRU is a quad core wifi router+switch combo with dual-wan capability and an eight port gigabit switch. It supports 802.11a/b/g (2.4GHz) along with 802.11n (up to 400 Mbps @ 256QAM) and 802.11ac (5GHz1: up to 1733 Mbps, 5GHz2: up to 867 Mbps @ 256QAM). An RJ-45 → DB-9 cable for the serial console port is included in the retail packaging. It runs OpenWRT Chaos Calmer from the OEM with a heavily customized LuCI web management interface.

Opening the case

Opening the case is pretty straight-forward, but it will require a T-8 Torx screwdriver.

  1. Set the case on a flat surface, bottom down.
  2. Around the rim of the lid of the case there are 12x T-8 Torx screws. Remove them.
  3. Gently lift the lid of the case off and set it to the side.
  4. ???
  5. PROFIT!

Serial

External Port (RJ-45)

This router has a traditional serial console port exposed via an RJ-45 connector on the front of the unit. This console port is for entering failsafe or debugging modes in early boot. Once booted, it functions as a standard tty with login capabilities. In the retail packaging of this device, an RJ-45 → DB-9 cable is provided.

Internal Port

Internally there is an exposed 4 pin header that functions as a 3.3V serial port for the bootloader, U-Boot. Here you can do everything you'd expect from a first stage bootloader, including debrick capabilities.
