Meaning of available, free and buffered memory

FIXME: New version (at least 19.07.x) now use total available, used, buffered and cached in LuCi status overview

Issue: What is the difference of total available memory, free and buffered shown in LuCi status overview (or free on the command line)?

Solution:

  • Total = free + buffered
  • Buffered = memory that is temporarily in use to handle I/O operations
  • Free = really free memory
