Root Password Maximum Length
The maximum length of the root password varies depending on which type of connection you need. This is both normal and expected. If you need more than one type of connection, it is suggested to consider choosing the lowest maximum length among all the options you need so that all types of connections you need are successful. For example, but not limited to, if you need both LuCI and SSH connections. Then, the suggested maximum length is 100 characters for successful connections with both LuCI and SSH.
Below are details about the maximum length of the root password per connection options
Options
LuCI
Maximum 256 characters for the root password. For successfully LuCi into OpenWrt.
Notes:
- The original author's testing was limited to:
- OpenWrt version 25 or more recent
- Root account
- Using any appropriate Internet Browser to your liking to connect into OpenWrt LuCI at https://192.168.1.1 (HTTPS) or http://192.168.1.1 (HTTP) or another appropriate URL to your liking.
- Using only UTF-8 characters. For other type of characters the limit is unknown and might be lower than 256 characters.
Serial
Unknown maximum length. For successfully Serial into OpenWrt.
Notes:
- Anyone both available and interested to test a serial connection is welcome to share their result here.
SSH
Maximum 100 characters for the root password. For successfully SSH into OpenWrt.
Notes:
- The original author's testing was limited to:
- OpenWrt version 25 or more recent
- Root account
- Using only UTF-8 characters. For other type of characters the limit is unknown and might be lower than 100. Anyone both available and interested to test other type of characters than UTF-8 characters is welcome to share their result here.
